Built another fort near Goodspring Source. Check the images I uploaded. Rocks make for excellent natural cover (and reduce the need for walls/barricades,) and the closeness to a town and a water source makes it easier to keep playing without worrying about too much fast-traveling.

Easiest to defend fort I've ever built, hands down. Fifteen guards and I'm set, only having to replace one every two or three raids.

i built mine west of 'violet the fiends' caravans on the cliffs, it's easy to defend, looks great and you can build up platforms. i'm going to upload some images soon.

I built mine on the "Scavenger Platform" on lake mead! the style of the buildings match very well and it gives the whole settlement a "Water World" feel. which is oddly fitting. My guards all have heavy incinerators so they can damage the raiders in the water. I think I'm going to make a bridge so they can run to my base though because i feel cheap.

My fort is in the Invernia's Dry Lake, it was made for pure flatland enough to build a nice base, and feel more like a nomad when the sand dusting in the air. I've made a normal base, nothing much special.

Primm is great for several reasons:

1: Close by when starting new game.

2:Similar to #1- you can use the console command 'movetoqt' when you have have a quest target there on your map if you want to teleport there before its been discovered.

3: Perfect size for placing boundary markers.

4: Has a trader that lives there.

5: Middle of map.

6: Already has some walls.

7: Buildings to take shelter in.

8: SPOILER!!!!!! One of the secret plans are located there. I'm not telling where tho.

And I'm sure you can think of other reasons too.

NOTE: When using the console command 'movetoqt', you may have more than one quest target. In this case, you would add a number after the command like so: 'movetoqt 1', 'movetoqt 2', etc.

My fort is in the NCRCF, went abit trigger happy killing everything there. Other than that i was thinking about putting it on Primms casino roof (with the railtracks).
Remember that:
1) Anywhere with already placed walls is a must!
2) The higher ground the better. You can shoot down easier than shoot up
3)If your planning to make a big fort, use somewhere quite remote to reduce lag and for more flat landscape.

I used the REPCONN building as my base of operations. Much like the one guy did in the screenshots section. I've added a stairway to the roof so snipers can pick off enemies easily and I've added walls all around the perimeter to keep unwanted company out. At least two AR guards are posted at each main gate and the ramp at the rear is heavily trapped and mined while also being covered by snipers. About the only things that really give me trouble are the OP ghouls. I'll be posting screenshots soon.

I've tested many places, and the best one as far as lag goes is... Beyond the canyon wreckage. No normal creature spawns, nothing causing any lag... No walls would be the bad part, unless you run for many, many, many minutes and reach the map's true limits, which are far beyond the pipboy map's border. I've tested this to see how big the 'real' map was. There must be a hundred square miles area outside the 'populated' map, made of absolutely nothing but dirt.

The ground's pretty even at some points, and in others it gives you wide 'higher ground' areas to build on.

How to get there? Either use RTS's scrap gathering to remove the wreckage almost completely (or the console 'delete' command,) or TCL up and over the wreckage. I'm betting a DLC later on will add content to that area and probably the Legion area of the map. (two camps and a DC nest? Seriously? That's it?)

@RazorKnight
Do you mean the pile of crashed car's and trucks in a small passage? if so there's an invisible wall there as a heads up.
