I knew the lock was pickable, I just never bothered. I always went to the Revered Mother to talk Sten out.

When I play HN the door is always locked but pickable, but the door doesn't even register for DElf, you either have to persuade the old bat in the chantry to give you the key or get Lelianna and I don't normally let her join the group.

it works on mine, no matter what race I play, as a rogue. I've got a pattern for ; I've done it so many times now I could do it in my sleep. lol

1 - run to Dane's Refuge, get Leliana & Blackstone Irregulars quest started (he stands over by where Leliana came from during the cutscene).
2 - talk to Sten
3 - run to Chantry, talk to Ser Donall (dead templar), get the chantry key (Ser Briant), talk to Patter Gritch (Blackstone Irregulars, if anybody doeasn't know where he is he's right beside the room where the Revered Mother is), and run to the other side with Leliana (across the hall from the RM), behind those bookshelves there's a chest with a gift for Leliana.
4 - talk to RM (if I didn't unlock Sten's cage) and btw, donating 5 sovereigns to the chantry is easy approval for Leliana.
