CTDs shortly after new game

Skyrim crashes to desktop about 90% of the time after I go through character creation. I am using Dime's Quick Start mod to skip the game opening, if I disable this mod I get CTDs instantly on new game. With it installed I can go through the main character creation smoothly, then it asks who I followed out of Helgen (Imperial or Stormcloak) and then it usually crashes within a couple of seconds. Rarely it won't crash and I can exit the Helgen cave and play for a bit, though I always get a CTD at some point before I even reach Riverwood (this could be from other issues though). If I manage to survive CTDs long enough to exit the cave and try loading those saves, it immediately CTDs.

 

Anyway I am using Mod Organizer, I've tried unticking any mod I think might drastically affect the game and even tried to disable the majority of my HD mods to no real avail.

 

I have been using LOOT to order my mods, I have made a bashed patch with Wrye Bash, and cleaned any mods LOOT gave me warnings on with TESEdit. I'm a bit out of options here, I have no idea what's causing the crashes!

Any advice would be nice, I've had most of these mods on previous games and they worked fine, I am unsure what the core issue is here.

this is still not how you test this matter. you have to uninstall mods not just 'deactivate' them.

 

try using Alternate start instead and see if it's the mod or if it's a conflict of some kind.

OP, are you using SSME? I'm thinking your crashes might be memory. Either way, you should download the Memory Blocks Log and check the log file it outputs after a crash. If the numbers in the first column are maxed out then your issue is memory related.

it is? sorry, im used to the phrase "i unticked (or checked)" meaning i deactivated not uninstalled.

Yeah. Since Mod Organizer keeps everything separate and nothing is put into the data folder it only loads the mods that are currently checked. So if he's unticking it then the files associated with that mod aren't being read by the game. It would be the same as going in and deleting all of the files out of the data folder if you were doing a manual install.

 

One of the many reasons I prefer it to NMM

Try deactivating any mods that may affect the dragons. I've had a similar problem with The Dragon Engine.

I have disabled Dime's before and tried without it but the game then just crashes before even showing the title, every single time.

 

Also as Wolvenna mentioned, I am actually "uninstalling" the mods with Mod Organizer when I say deactivating them, I should have clarified my wording a bit better.

I downloaded the Memory Blocks Log, and ran through the game several times, each time it crashed however I wasn't maxed. Block 1 which said 512 never exceeded 365, and Block 2 which said 256 never went past 194. So while I had assumed it was a memory issue as well it could be a different issue altogether.

 

Try deactivating any mods that may affect the dragons. I've had a similar problem with The Dragon Engine.

 

I removed Deadly Dragons and Dragon Combat Overhaul and now the game will at least not always crash in the same area (still does sometimes) but still CTDs before other mods have a chance to finish loading. I never had issues with these mods in previous installs though.

 

 

I'll admit I haven't gone through removing every mod to test as some I didn't presume would cause any issues (companion or weapon/armor mods for example) but I may go through and try to deactivate these to see if there's any significant impact.

Okay, so it isn't a memory issue. If block1 said 512 then I'm assuming you've already turned on SSME in the SKSE.ini file.

 

To save yourself a little work, go through and identify mods that you've used in the past together without issue. Then deactivate any mods that are new this time around.

 

Also, I see you're using a bashed patch. I don't generally use those, so I may be way off base here, but are you creating a new patch when you're disabling mods for testing?

 

I'd also check to make sure that your mods, especially the unofficial patches, are all up to date.

Also I didn't see the Climates of Tamriel - Weather Patch in your load order.
