Why are kids im/mortal in your game?

Im sure this has been done to death, but Im curious to see why people use the "kill kids" mods, and why some choose to avoid them.

For me, the fact that children can die is more of a challenge, not permission to kill them, but to protect them in town fights, to make sure they arent killed by me (accidental fratricide) or anyone else. It sets a much stronger imperative to protect the kids precisely because they arent immortal. Otherwise, Braith with her little knive is killing the master vampire that kills everyone else in Whiterun, simply because she cant die, and you have no need to help. To me, that seems wrong, and "UN-heroic". But you can play the "batman" choice and simply chose not to save the kiddies, if you want.

So that, in the end, while killing children is allowed in my game, it actually encourages me to be more heroic and more careful, that I not hurt the you ng and innocent.

Except for Braith; that brat has it coming :D

Yeah, there are times when I would just LOVE to slap Braith around. You afraid of me NOW little girl? Maybe you will learn to keep that big yap shut. She once followed me into Breezehome, with her "I'm not afraid of you." speech. I smacked her twice with my Ebony daggers, and all she did was cower, and whine. Wonder if someone has a spanking animation yet...... :) THAT would be soul satisfying. (and the kid in dragonsreach as well.... "Another wanderer come to lick my fathers boots." He could stand a good beat down too.... or, maybe I should just kill his father.....)

I think Beth made the kids immortal, to prevent YouTube being flooded with characters going on child-killing campaigns. The overly-sensitive progressives here in the states would all have strokes...... and the game would get some truly vile rating, and would be banned from various consoles. :)

Oh, I understand why Bethesda made the game the way it did. they faced enough marketing problems with jackwagons over what is allowed in vanilla.

But Im curious about the child killing mods. Why do people use them, or chose not to.

Is it just to kill Braith? Though, more seriously, is there a reason beyond "everything should be killable"?

And those that oppose, is it simply "that line should never be crossed"?

Im not looking to argue, or push one iponion over others. I just want to see the thoughts of the community.

I pretty much ignore the children in the game as they're irrelevant, and that's probably why I never bothered downloading a killable children mod. I guess I see them as little more than background clutter. However I do like the idea of being able to take my kid on a treasure hunt or having the kid tag along as I wander around Skyrim, and be constantly faced with the challenge of keeping them safe. I think that would have added something very significant to the game.

They are rather annoying clutter..... The only kids that AREN'T obnoxious brats are the ones you adopt...... all the kids with parents seem to be spoiled brats, with no respect for their elders...... Makes me wonder what Beth REALLY had in mind here.....

Also, keep in mind, there are not only 'killable children' mods, there are also PLAYABLE children mods.......

I don't like unkillable characters full stop, the game should provide alternatives for when a character dies, making them indestructible is lazy and it results in Bethesda's awful linear follow the arrow quest style.

They can die in mine because its unrealistic or at least infeasible that they cannot, leaving aside emotive arguments for a moment. At least when it doesn't conflict with Hearthfires.

What I do find interesting is that Bethesda clearly intended them to be able to die originally and the feature was abandoned at a late stage of development and removing it would presumably have been too much work else why still have all the animations, death cries etc fully functional? I'd like to have been a fly on the wall during that meeting when they decided to disallow it.

Because some 'morality police' type organization would have had fits...... and made life hell for Beth.

Thats not the question. Its perfectly obvious why they stopped it but why did they start it in the first place. They must have known there would have been trouble surely. Maybe they thought they could ride it out, who knows. Theres something of a mystery there.

n.b. there is no debate here OP. You're asking for peoples experiences rather than articulating an argument. "Killable children: for or against?" would be a debate.

I installed ERSO and didn't realise that it included mortal children, so it was a bit of a shock when those bandits who followed me to Riverwood decided to cut them down. I've chosen to keep it like that, though - realism. I don't kill the children myself, but if they get killed by something else, then that's just the way it is.
