Subsurf Modifier

I am making a model of a pole-axe, and I have created two objects: the head of the axe and the handle. I want to join the objects, but I have a subsurf modifier on the handle. I only want the subsurf on the handle, but any time I join the objects, blender applies the subsurf to the head as well. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Mate,I am not an expert, but try seperating the axe into two different objects (not to completely break the object into two pieces, but just to seperate them into two diffetent objects) with P ,and apply the Subsurf Modifier to the object you seperated and which you wanted to modify.I think that should be it :D
