Deleted1790188User
I recently spent 200 bucks on more Vram, which my brother reccomended so I could run Skyrim on ultra settings at a good FPS. However, while it does run fairly well at first, after a few minutes it starts to really slow and get choppy. Alt-tabbing out of the game seems to smooth it out again for another few minutes, but only for it to come back and alt-tabbing randomly causes no error CTDs for me. Any way I can fix this and run the game at high graphics? Info-wise, I have all the DLC and have it installed on my D drive, D/Steamlibrary/Steamapps/Common/Skyrim. I am running quite a lot of mods, mostly immersive ones, but they didn't seem to take a toll on my system before at medium level graphics. I'm using the FXAA post-process injector - I had trouble figuring out ENBs and I like pretty sharp, bright colours. I would like to think my rig is decent, but I'm not super savvy. I basically just copied anything that looked important from DXdiag. I'll post all the information below and the mods under spoilers so there won't be a wall 'o text. Thanks so much for any help! Ianc1
If you have added more Vram to your gpu then you have broken it, you would have to dismantle and remove the existing vram and resolder the new chips on the board, so I think you are confusing Vram and System Ram up, System ram is installed on you motherboard and Vram is installed on your GPU, If you only have 4gb of system ram you can add more, but skyrim will not use more than 4GB of ram, the extra ram will make your os faster. Skyrim is a 32Bit Program and as a 32Bit program it will have those limits, there is nothing you or anybody will be able to do. Have you checked to see if the ram is the same as your other ram, mixing ram types and voltages can cause problems. what you should have done is use the money you spend and get a better GPU. Deleted1790188User
Ooh, yes, I am mixing up the two - thank you for the correction! Apparently my Ram is the same as the other one, according to my brother - he's the tech savvy one and I basically went with his advice, though I doubt he knew that Skyrim wouldn't use more than 4gb anyway. I wish I could go back in time and do a new GPU instead! Thing is, I can only ever do serious computer changes when he's around, because he does the installation of stuff. He was here for the new system ram, but now he's gone again. I should probably man up and do my own stuff, but I'm terrified of breaking my computer. Anything else I can do? I used Hialgoboost, which makes it run even smoother at first, but it inevitably gets just as choppy again over time. I've also tried lowering the graphics some, turning off Anti aliasing and antriscopic filtering, but it isn't making a difference. Thanks for the advice! saurusmaximus
Are you using ENBoost? All you need for that is the ENB binaries. Check this article on what that is and how to install it.You will need to do the following edits to make it work with SweetFx:1) Unzip SweetFX package in a different folder.2) Rename the file d3d9.dll into Sweet_d3d9.dll3) Copy everything in Skyrim directory.4) Open file enblocal.ini5) Make sure these are set[PROXY]EnableProxyLibrary=trueProxyLibrary=Sweet_d3d9.dll[GLOBAL]UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=true
ironbender800
running ENB with SFO, city mods, and texture mods, will simply kill your performance. I have a very similar system except SLI 660's. and i still get some stutter and drops in certain areas and i really avoid the large textures. I also have enb local configured correctly. My advice would be decide whats more important.....textures or ENB.....personally i think ENB alone is all you need for good graphics. waaaaaay more noticable and prettier. also make sure your view distances and shadow quality arent super crazy. edit.....i see you arent running enb. apologies.....id still go easy on SFO and the texture mods tho. Deleted1790188User
I'm a bit confused - am I better off with or without ENB to help how it runs? Right now I use FXAA post-process injector, since I like having control over it and it doesn't seem to give FPS too much of a hit. Maybe I'll downgrade SFO to one of the less intensive ones and reduce the texture quality a little. [And maybe looking into sucking it up and getting a new GPU after all.] Thanks, all! I wonder, though, why does it get better for a while after alt-tabbing? This is less an issue to solve and more asked out of curiosity.
saurusmaximus
If you are lagging right now, adding an ENB preset will only make things worse. Note that this is different from just adding the ENB Binaries (which all ENB presets need to run) for using ENBoost. As for the alt-tab thing, I have no idea why that would work
postal001
You're running out of vram. When you alt-tab (in full screen mode), the gpu will purge the contents of its vram, making the game run better before the vram fills up again. Try switching all your textures to 1k versions.
