NBalchemist Posted June 29, 2015 Share Posted June 29, 2015 I'm not sure if this belongs here or not, but Dungeons & Dragons is a game I've always wanted to try, but can't because I either have no friends or the ones I do have aren't interested even the slightest bit. But I still want to try it! So I'm looking for tips on getting into the game, how not to be a total stupid newb when I find a group of people, general advice, etc. Thanks in advance! Roachbait Posted August 2, 2015 Share Posted August 2, 2015 One good way to get into the world of tabletop role-playing is to seek out conventions, or "Cons". Gen-Con (or, "Role-Player Mecca"..)takes place every year in Geneva, Wisconsin, and you have a very good chance of meeting Mr. Gygax himself, if you're lucky, he's pretty cool. For me, it was truly a pilgrimage. Some colleges around the country also have yearly events, though they are not really 'hyped-up" as much anymore. Hexicon used to be one I went to in Greensboro, NC, as a DM...but, that was years ago, so they may not even have it any more, or changed what it's name is. At one point or another, everyone is new to the game, so don't let that bother you. It's better to just be a player who pays attention to the details a DM begrudgingly gives out, and be a group-player...most people who go "lone-wolf" end up being part of some dragons treasure trove later on. Many of them sponsor a group, or have a list of groups in your area.The local library in my town has a once a year D&D game , mostly for middle & high schoolers. You could ask the librarian if they know of a group also.The local university here also has a D&D group that meets weekly during the school year. To start, You probably won't need to have the books or dice as nearly everyone else will have whatever is needed. Most players will have spare dice they can loan.Every group will be different as to how they play so if you don't like the first one try another group. I'm in a similar situation so I play with people online that way. I also use Myth-Weavers to keep track of my character sheets. But online tabletop isn't quite the same, I know...
