Roguelike Style Death

Recommended Posts

Hi again! I would think this would be easy to script but I'm not sure because I actually dont know anything. I'll outline what I had in mind below:

> die
> respawn in wilderness w no items (autosave gets overwritten at this point)

> all active quests are failed

> appearance, name, level, stats and special are randomized (optional)

> players old body can be found at place of death stripped of 95% of its items

anyone willing to take a stab at this? basically just want death to be more of a punishment and just deleting the save is no fun

There is a mod with a similar concept, although some details differ (apperance, name, level etc being randomized isn't part of it). I'll see if I can find it.

You might be thinking of Another Kick in the Head, which gets suggested time and time again. It is kinda similar to what I posted but most all of the features are missing except respawning in a different place.

People have suggested 'Make Fallout No Fun' mods before, and thankfully no modders have picked up the idea.

Why do you think such a mod would remove the fun from the game? If anything I would think it would make the game more challenging and encourage the player to explore other more obscure quests and objectives.

In challenging games, you die a lot, that is the point of it being a challenge.

If you just take away everything the player has worked for and keep the enemies at a challenging level, there will never be any quests or anything else built up for the player to build any sort of investment in. It would effectively take away every single RPG element and make it a game about wandering the Wastes shooting up random encounters with a character with no backstory or personality.

The other option, which is probably what would happen, is someone would make the game easier to adjust for the extreme punishment of death, that way you won't die as much. But what fun is that?

I want to walk into Super Duper Mart knowing that around any corner I might get blown the f**k up, and that it will be epic, but then I will get to come right back in and fight the challenging fight again. Keep testing my skills until I adjust and get it right.

Getting tossed far away from the challenge as opposed to working at it until you learn to overcome it is not fun.

It seems that it's more a matter of personal taste. If you want to perfect every mission with unlimited do-overs and no punishment for dying then that's fine. I didn't even request for that to be removed (I only asked that autosave got overridden because I personally hate savescumming lol) But this is New Vegas, not hotline miami. New Vegas is in it's own world which is depicted as bleak and unforgiving. If I f*#@ up in New Vegas I want to feel like there are consequences for doing so.

"there will never be any quests or anything else built up for the player to build any sort of investment in"

I disagree with this completely. If death had an actual consequence for the player, it would cause them to accept less dangerous quests that they otherwise would to improve their character stats and get better gear to take on the more dangerous ones. It would make them explore the world more than they would before and give it more time to establish itself. Every questline, even small ones like Come Fly With Me, will feel like it's own satisfying journey with a beginning and end for the player that undertook it (at least it has in my experience playing w permadeath mods). Playing the game this way made it feel like everything was more personal and immersive. Novac was my home and not just a setpiece. Decisions had to be made this way that otherwise wouldn't be if dying was little more than just "reload your last save plz."

But again, the option is there for unlimited retrys. Just always felt like cheating to me.
