Don't have the game yet but a question: with Templars new powerful antimage talents, do enemy Templars in the game stop your mages cold in their tracks?

Looking at their abilities, it sure seems like a mage character, no matter how powerful would get stopped in their tracks by a powerful Templar; I guess a good analogy would be a powerful and ancient vampire of vast strength and speed, forced to fight in the sun (let's say it just weakens him severely). Nothing the vampire could do would stop his hunters. Likewise, Templars have extremely high magic resistance and powerful abilities that shut off magic almost instantly if what I read is right.

Does anyone here have direct experience of playing a mage vs. Templar (preferably on nightmare)?

without spoiling, my first play through was with a mage and I never had problems with the templars. there were a couple times where they drained my mana but it wasn't a "shut my mage completely down" type issue. The mage feels more like an arcane warrior to me than a pure mage in DA2.

But the Templar specialisation looks like it is pure antimage; hmm, maybe only as a player?

Hm... i forgot where but at one point Anders, who was in my party got silenced and couldn't cast spells for a long time whatsoever and could only attack with his regular staff attack.

There are enough stuns and CC for all, that you learn to deal with it. A larger problem for my mages are usually the AoE pull/damage spells/effects from various enemies; since one of these can be fatal even if you are at maximum health.

I'd worry more for assassins and hunters, since they like to change target once they stealth.
