Morrowind Enhanced just quit working

Hi. I've had a Windows 7 computer for a bit now, and have Morrowind installed. I have Morrowind Enhanced (MWE) because I like Blocking Enhanced.

One day, out of the blue, MWE quit working. The reason it gives is "MWE_LoadScript. The script will not run anymore. Trying to RunFunction index greater than function count." Of course, when I can see the MW world, then it tells me MWE is not running.

Again, it's out of the blue. It worked fine for months. Now it does this. What is this error? Why did it suddenly appear? How do I fix it?

I've tried:

- Disabling my 40+ mods except for MWE and Blocking Enhanced.

- Starting a New Game

- Moving MW Enhanced to a new folder at root.

- Starting Morrowind normally, then ALT-tabbing and starting MWE.

- Cleaning a save with Wrye Mash, then loading that save.

- Running MWE in Compatibility Mode and as Administrator

- Changing versions of MWE to the dev version 1.6

Googling this, I see other people have gotten a similar error, but nothing's resolved it. Can anyone please help me?

That "Trying to RunFunction index greater than function count." error means the game engine's found a script function it doesn't know what to do with. SO if someone's running a mod which uses script functions from the expansions without running Tribunal or Bloodmoon they'll see that error.

So...

Some how you've lost the MWE function definitions.

Are you running MWE_Base.esp? Always use that plugin and the EXE from the dev kit. The EXE needs to be running when Morrowind starts and MWE_Base.esp needs to be loaded.

Probably not essential but make sure the MWE mod(s) you're running load after MWE_Base.esp. mlox will sort out your load order there.

Maybe one of the MWE plugins has become corrupted, re-extract everything from their archives.

Odd. Following your instructions, I replaced all the MWE mods with fresh ones (including MWE itself). I made sure the load order is correct. It just doesn't want to initialize MWE for some reason. It throws me the same error. Good thing it's only one mod (though it makes combat less fun without it). At least Shade's Always Hit Morrowind still works. Morrowind is awesome, but it's better with mods.

Yes. Even when I start a brand new game, sitting there with Jiub and no interface and no name, MWE still says it is not loaded. As requested:

Later, I moved MWE_Base and MWE_Blocking to load at the very end. Still didn't help. I was in the middle of a quest mod when this started: Emma's Witchgirl adventure. Since everything was working fine, there was no reason (at the time) to change out mods or anything. Since MWE Blocking half-worked (reducing my Shield skill to 0, but not letting me block) when I loaded a saved game from within another save, I disabled MWE entirely.

The cleaned saves break my game entirely. The game can be loaded, but my character's armor and weapons (which, strangely, are all from mods) don't show up.

To the best of my knowledge, I did not change or patch those. I have the GOTY edition, which is sort of patched all by itself. There are mods that caused other strange conflicts, but I kicked those to the curb.

ExcuseMe.esp

<snip>

Where'd you get Morrowind Enhanced from? Your version is "MWEBase.esp" and not "MWE_Base.esp"

Doesn't look like you've run mlox as there's a bunch of problems with your mod list:

Don't enable grass mods, you only use those when generating distant land with MGE / MGE / XE.

"Balmora Council Club.esp" or "Balmora Council Club EV.esp", not both

"Improved_No_Glow_v1-MW_Trib_Blood.esp" - not needed, read this

"Jessica.esp" - later version out which uses scripting functions available in Tribunal and Bloodmoon.

You're not using the Unofficial Morrowind Patch, grab 1.6.6

<snip>

The cleaned saves break my game entirely. The game can be loaded, but my character's armor and weapons (which, strangely, are all from mods) don't show up.

<snip>

Doesn't sound like you're using Wrye Mash right...

With Wrye Mash installed follow this procedure to clean a savegame:

Firstly, initial cleaning of your installed mods:

(1) On the Mods tab all mods should have a green checkbox.

(2) If any mods have a yellow checkbox, select them and then look for the

Save button in the bottom right. Click that and the mod file will be

updated and the error removed. The error just means that the mod was

created with an earlier version of Morrowind to the one you're using.

Saving in Mash will update this version info.

(3) If you have any mods with red checkboxes then you do not have a ESM

file needed by that mod loaded. Check the mod's readme.

Secondly, cleaning your savegames:

(4) Onto the Saves tab, select the savegame you want to fix.

(5) When the savegame is selected the list in the bottom right will be

populated with the mods currently associated with the savegame.

(6) Right click the column headers ("File" and "Num") and choose Sync to

Load List (this will change the mods associated with the savegame to

match those currently selected on the Mods tab).

(7) Click Save

( Right click the savegame and choose Repair All.

(8a) Optionally, right click the savegame and choose Remove > Debris Cells.

(9) The checkbox for the save should now be purple.

The person who created the mod was using a different version of Morrowind to the one you're using. The file size of any ESM files used to create an ESP are saved in the ESP's plugin header. On load thoe file sizes are compared to the local ones and the error displayed if there's a difference.

I don't see any MWE-related error message in your warnings.txt?

Try a clean save without MWE:

Save game in an interior cell (I tend to use one of the cave dwellings in Gnisis as they're unaffected by the mods I'm running).

Exit game.

Using Mash's Mods tab deselect MWE_Base.esp and MWE_Blocking.esp

Onto the Saves tab, select most recent savegame.

Do the "sync to load list" thing (see above).

Save

Repair All.

Optionally, right click the savegame and choose Remove > Debris Cells.

Start Morrowind and load altered save game.

Save in a new slot

Exit Morrowind

Re-enable MWE_Base.esp and MWE_Blocking.esp

Load Morrowind and open most recent save.

The good news is: I got it working. The bad news is: the traditional solutions did not work.

For some reason, cleaning the save didn't work. I mean, it worked and resynchronized the mods and everything worked just fine, but nothing helped my poor, ailing, MWE. The RunFunction errors did, however, start appearing in my Warnings.txt. But, I know how to use Wrye Mash to clean my saves now. Thank you. :)

Then, I started getting other, strange behaviors I couldn't explain in other games and applications.

Cursing Windows 7, I logged off and then logged back on, hoping something would change for the better. Magic! It works again! I never had this problem with XP or Vista. Apparently MWE functions are tied to uptime, at least where 7 is concerned.

Side note: Grass mods only need MGE if they are animated. From the grass mod readme: "Do you need MGE to run this mod? No, you only need MGE if you want animated grass."

But I appreciate your patience and your help. Been playing Morrowind since 2003, and used everything from MGE to MWSE to MWE and used various combinations all together with leveled lists, archive invalidations, and all that. But Wrye Mash instructions always mystified me. Thank you again for helping me, and for de-mystifying a rather simple process.

Cool, good news. The old turning it off and on again trick.

Still interested in a download link for the "MWEBase.esp" file. I'll add it into mlox, assuming it's not a typo.

It's a typo. I was using a list generated by ReOrder Mods ++. It gave me a list of *all* my mods, not just my installed ones. So there were errors. I edited the list in haste, and I removed that mod from the generated list, then added it back. The vast majority of my mods were obtained from mw.modhistory.com, apparently affiliated with Fliggerty.
