I found this on the Australian game site "Kotaku" while looking for something else (about Morrowind, actually.)

It sums up my own feelings about DA2 very, very well. (So far, at least, I'm only into Act II at the moment...)

Thought I'd share it with the crowd here: "Let Off Some Steam: Dragon Age II Reviews".

Good review, almost spot on. But if I were a pro reviewer I would mercilessly slaughter this game when it comes to expressing my final judgment as a score. But then again I'm not employed by someone who gets his revenues from advertisements paid by big game publishers. Almost every complaint I have about this game - unimaginative ambushes, repetitive encounters, SPIDERS, SPIDERS, SPIDERS... oh and Shades - is there, it's all in the review, except for the obvious explanation for stellar scores - advertising money.

PS: The word 'slaugther' is a bit a strong: my score for DA2 is about 7.2/10 (fair).

The game’s art design is nothing short of stunning

I'm laughing so hard right now.

You say "ta-MAY-toe", he says "ta-MAH-toe". Likes and dislikes in art are notoriously subjective. As far as I was concerned, that was the least important of his observations...

My thought, everything that people complain, the first few days after the game releases, are right there in the review. I don't think BioWare will pay attention to all those negative review. Some people claim DA 2 is very successful and going to sell more than Origins, which of course, currently debated at BSN.

I also agreed a great deal with the Destructoid Review

Opinions; I for one agree with the review & I'm currently playing DA:O, and every minute in this texture hell only makes me like the visuals of DA2 more. (Texels values and tints of the textures are horrid in DA:O, I almost forgot how bad it was)

Just finished the Destructoid review. Very similar to the Kotaku one in its tone of: "There was much to like, and much to moan about the game."

And also that the Reviewer clearly did like it, but (as the 7-Rating at the end indicates): there are "imposible to overlook" flaws.

Aye, and I feel exactly the same. As I play DA:O now I can appreciate how much I find improved, but at the same time how glaring the faults are (and DA:O had some of these as well). It's like when you are in an epic fight, and you are quickly slaying/slaughtering a truck load of bandits, and the local citizens are standing there in the thick of it doing nothing, or playing in the dirt. & that's something the whole game feels cursed with. (DA:O did the same on the other hand, I so miss people fleeing for their lives, as they do in FO1-FONV and other games).

&
2.5 out of 10 review of DA2 from Gamecritic.com ~ I don't agree with the vehement loathing of DA2 seen here, since I liked many aspects of the game, and some I feel are much improved since DA:O, and not just worse in every aspect; but its a fair view, and ok enough as food for thought. esp. since its so scathing. & I do agree when it comes to some points in full ~

Funny, maybe I'm just fond of conspiracy theories, but this reminds me of the arstechnica.com article:

"THQ pulled this... this was funny," one of the hosts said. Their reviewer received an early copy of the new THQ UFC title early for review. THQ, oddly, gave some rules about when the review could go live. The review could be published early if the Metacritic score was above 85 percent, but if it was under that minimum the review couldn't be released until the game's release. "This is not just THQ; this is very common," I was told. The score failed to hit the magic number, so the review was not released as of the recording of the podcast."

Seems to fit game reviews in general, or most of the 9s and 10s are released ante, or one week post release; while low scores usually starts trickling in later. That said I also remember an article in Edge about reviews, and how one of the reviewers interviewed rarely spent more than 15-30 minutes per game (and would normally hit the median score and write something that would work as a review [It wasn't one of the Edge reviewers mind]) .
