FWE Error on Alternate Start Beginning?

Because of earlier freezes and CTDs I decided to try and completely reinstall Fallout 3 and my mods and start a new game. When I tried starting a new game before uninstalling and reinstalling, I got the 'There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive H:.' error. Unfortunately whenever I try to start a new game via the alternate start, I get the same error 'There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive H:.' I've tried pressing cancel and continue but even after the error goes away, the game stops responding and I have to close it. I've tried leaving it for a few minutes to see if it might start responding again, but no luck.

 

I also recently changed my Steam location from Program Files to my D drive, so Fallout is now located at D: Steam/Steamapps/Common/Fallout 3 goty . That seemed to work okay before when I got just hourly freezes or CTDs, so I'm not sure if it's associated with this error.

 

EDIT: With experimentation, I think the error might have something to do with FOSE, as when I start with the vanilla launcher the error doesn't pop up, though of course without FOSE it immediately crashes upon loading the alternate start. Just a thought, anyway.

 

I've tried using BOSS, the INI tweaks for busethreadedai and running without the unofficial patch going and making a merged patch but nothing seems to help at all. Below if my load order. If anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this, please share!

After experimentation, I might have pinned what is the in-game cause of the error - apparently whenever I choose the 'scavenger' history, the error happens, but other ones I've tried like Regulator and Wastelander work fine. No idea why. I do really like the Scavenger history, so is there a fix for this error so I can use it?

I used the mod Alt Start FWE Redux and that let me get by the drive error for a while, but now it's cropping up again. Any solutions? I really want to be able to play again. I've continued tinkering, so here's my new load order:

You are not reading the requirements for either the Blackened Patch or the installation instructions for Paradox Ignition version of Mart's Mutant Mod. Reading the instructions or the ReadMe is essential for the successful modding of Fallout 3.

Can I ask what I might be missing? I've gotten the Paradox Ignition version now and deactivated the other MMM esps and used BOSS again, but to no avail. I apologize for having to ask - I have a minor learning disability that makes following these directions difficult sometimes. I tend to get lost between the different pages and instructions, but I'm also determined to get some more Fallout 3 played before Fallout 4 comes out. :tongue:

 

EDIT: Ah, noticed I need to delete the other MMM plugins from Data folder because the game will load them anyway. Just did that, but still no luck. Old saves seem to work okay, but ever since I got the error, saves after that don't work - the error comes up as they load.

What happened to the Blackened Patch in your new load order?

 

I am really at a loss as to why you are getting a notice to install the disk. With either NMM or FOMM, that requirement is eliminated. After installing FOMM and FOSE, I have never had to have the disk installed.

 

You should not be getting the no disk notification with a Steam game, anyway.

 

Other than not having the Blackened patch, I don't see anything wrong with your load order.

Ah, I must have accidentally deleted that one, too. Reinstalled and reactivated. As for the disk error, I wish I knew! I'm currently trying to play from an old, working save to see what happens. I'd like to find the solution both to avoid it in future and so I can post it here in case anyone else encounters a similar problem. If I do find anything I'll post it here, and if anyone has ideas, please do share. Thank you for the help thus far!

I THINK I might have found what causes the error - whenever I'm outside in the area around Jury Metro Station, I get it. It started during gameplay but I was able to click 'continue' until it went away and the game continued fine. This happened twice more, until I exited another cell back into the area around Jury Metro Station and while loading the error popped up and the game stopped responding. Maybe it has something to do with a mod that alters that area? I'm not sure which, though.

FOUND IT! At least, I THINK I have. :D I found uninstalling An Evening with Mister Manchester, both the main plugin and the update, stopped the error. I'm not sure why that's causing the error with that mod, but removing it seems to be the solution. Fingers crossed that now that I've uninstalled it, this will be the end of it. I did try it with the official patch as it mentions this as important on the mod page, but no dice, so I'll just make do without it.

Do/did you actually have a drive H:?

 

A mesh with an explicitly defined texture path, in this case something like "H:\game\data\texture\texture.dds", instead of an implicitly defined texture path like "\texture\texture.dds", can cause the game to ask for the disk when that mesh is loaded if the system actually has that drive letter, "H:", in use.
