Game Into Self Destruct?

Having a fair number of problems these days and I can't figure out what's going on.

 

First off, and this seems to be limited to Whiterun, I'm having a lot of trouble with the game either locking up or crashing when I try to enter the taverns or Jorvaskkar. A fair part of the time I can enter if I leave my followers waiting in the square or some other relatively distant place, do a solo approach to the door, and then wait a while before I attempt to enter. Frequently I can then enter, however, quite a bit of the time the game will either crash to desktop, or will begin to load the interior and then crash to desktop. Alternatively, the AI will simply lock up when I attempt to enter. Frex, it'll go to blackscreen and then not load anything.

 

On other occasions it'll load interior, but one or more of the NPCs will be wearing gear that's showing the pale, mauve color characteristic of a mod that's not functioning properly. Then, I can do a save, quit the game back to desktop, restart the game and the problem will have corrected itself. Also, I can often interact with that npc, perhaps having them do something, and then the gear will revert to normal.

 

Other times, I can exit the tavern/inn and when I head out sometimes the game will crash or lock up. This is frequently with a follower in tow, but not always. Or, I can exit the building, go down the steps and begin to mix with the follower group and then the game will crash to desktop.

 

Also, the game will often crash when I attempt to save...usually in an interior cell in Whiterun.

 

I've also been having a problem with the game locking up when I'm scrolling down a menu with my mouse. The erratic mouse behavior is not limited to the game, however. The mouse has been having problems during downloads as well, with the download locking up. Also, the mouse will occasionally lock up in the corners of the screen or in other places on the edge. Whenever I check on mouse performance the AI tells me all is well.

 

In an attempt to correct the situation, I've done an uninstall(without going into the registry to remove the leftover bits and pieces), then reinstalled from disc, followed by download from STEAM. This seems to have helped a bit, but not enough to make me happy. I can play the game now but with a great many precautionary saves and a lot of "control, alt, delete" exits from lockup.

 

I wonder if all of this has corrupted game files or if my comp itself is having problems. I can play other games, such as all the Witchers, all the DAs, all the Total Wars and all is well. I wonder if all my mod usage is causing the game to have the equivalent of a nervous breakdown.

 

I'm playing with the latest version of LOOT for mod sort. All the latest versions of the various crafting and smithing mods are installed, however, I've not installed all the requisite patches, mostly because I'm not sure which ones I need, nor do I always understand whether I need to overwrite.

 

Another bit I've noticed is that I'm pretty sure that when I uninstall a mod using NMM, various bits and pieces are left behind. This seems to be particularly true of mods like SMIM, ETAC, etc.
