So, you know how in most rpg's you go around exploring quest unrelated content and stuff.... and you find a named cave you can enter and you're like "Oh man, finally taking a detour payed off! f*** yeah, its go time!" and you're expecting to find some wicked unique enemy and stuff... and the caves are usually always different... I mean they're caves - a hole in a mountain is a hole in a mountain... but then you try "exploring a cave" in dragon age 2.
And what do you get? Well, I've played through the game 2 times now and... must have gone through 15+ cave enterances each playthrough and it got me thinking.. "Why the f*** do 15 different caves have a total of around 4 different layouts?!". And there's no unique enemies to boost! I mean you do find a pride demon here and there but not much else in DA2 - just pride, desire, sloth & rage repeating over and over. And the loot is nothing impressive - found randomly generated looted from enemies regular enemies that turned out better than lots of uniques.
Oh, and almost forgot! Why are there cement walls blocking paths to make it seem like a different cave?! Seriously, cement walls with wodden frames blocking a group of 4 who's attacks can pierce a high dragon's scales with... ease actually - the fight with the dragon lasted like... 42 seconds, and can't break a cement wall. I refuse to call it anything other than retarded.
I know there's a lot more to whine about in DA2, and a lot of things to love about it too but... these caves bring me down big time... Anyone who's played Morrowind to its full will know wtf a real cave is. Phat lewt is what it should be - but isn't. *sigh* Time to replay Origins and hope for the 3rd installement to bring some real caves.. I guess.
Caves....

4 different layouts? That's being way too generous.

The idea of what is able to be broken in a realistic fashion in a video game has always been abused. I've seen layouts for game maps that would be instantly defeated if our wise protagonist had thought to bring a ladder (Lookin' at you, WoW). I doubt that issue would ever be solved. The unclimbable chain link fences of doom in F:NV? The rickety picket fence that'll stop a nuclear fireball in Oblivion?

I wish they would have at the least flipped and mirrored the maps. It would have been a little deviation.

I remmember when I got a new cave layout - I was so happy.... only to be dissapointed as it was used about 10,000 times through that act.
And I agree with the cement wall thing - and I really dont get how loads of giant spiders manage to open these walls to get in there...

Granted this is an obvious tactic, but it saves on game development time. If anyone is at fault, it's EA.

You were able to make it through a second play through? Sheesh, you must be very tolerant. Personally, I thought the game was super boring in all areas. The caves, ah yes the caves. The moment I first realized I was in a cave that I had been before I was like ... "hmm, they probably just reused this cave only because it's a filler quest, that's gotta be the reason".
The second time I hit the same cave I was like "Umm .. what's going on here? What's this? That same cave yet again? That same open area where I got ambushed twice before, could it be? Ahh, yep, another ambush".
Finally, when some irrelevant filler quest sent me back, I just turned the difficulty to easy and let my party take care of the mobs while I folded laundry and watched Dexter reruns. This game has some of the lamest dungeon encounters of any RPG I've played, ever. :[
