The recent total failure of my first mage play-through got me thinking: does anyone else have a go-to dream team that they just can't break up, or do you like to switch characters up on the fly?

I definitely have a dream team, and it's by no means an ideal setup that exploits crazy-good stuff like Walking Bomb: it's more about including the characters and roles that I enjoy the most. It's also definitely a very control-oriented group. I'll list mine below; I'd love to hear what or who other players use.

  • Hawke: Tank. Primarily Weapon and Shield, Templar, and any other talent that increases his threat.
  • Anders: Support. He's really the backbone of my party. With Martyr, he's more versatile than Spirit Healers, and he can nail class combos better than any other mage. Other than the essential CCC spells (Winter's Grasp and Chain Lightning), I don't really pick up any other offensive spells for him.
  • Carver: Melee DPS. Carver's one of my favorite characters. This is a pretty good case of "well, a second mage with Walking Bomb would probably be better, but..." That, and he's a stagger machine.
  • Sebastian: Threat Management / Single Target DPS. I skipped Archery on this guy entirely. I replaced Royal Archer with Assassin, and specced almost fully into Scoundrel, while also picking up Stealth. I spend a lot of time controlling Sebastian just due to the nature of his spec. Anything that isn't caught by Hawke's taunt or slips past Anders' CC, Sebastian can kill or redirect.

Varric is my only "must-have" companion. Can barely stand Anders, and want nothing to do with Sebastian.

i did something really weird with my mage, because it was getting boring for me, and i really missed tanking as an arcane warrior. so i started over and tried to make a mage tank. i replaced a few of the mage trees with the templar tree, anders' tree for the dps and cd reduction, merrills tree for wrath and ensnare, and fenris' tree for lyrium ghost and spirit burst, and use smite ensnare and spirit burst to aoe aggro and the buffs and just use high dps to hold aggro. I also switched merril to a spirit healer. anyways mines usually..

Hawke - mage tank
Isabela w/ shadow tree - dps
Merrill w/ spirit healer tree - healer
Aveline - to pick up any stragglers, but when shes too close i pull every thing off of her anyways.

weird huh
