Recommended Posts

So i was curious which of this systems: 10, 8.1 and 7 has the best compatibility, stability, and i'm curious about performance as well, for the following games:

TES Oblivion

TES Skyrim

Fallout 3

Fallout NV

Fallout 4

Well, with a question like that, you're def going to get all the fanbois and fangirls posting their favorite. No one will just give you facts. I always had problems with Windows 7 running games efficiently. Windows 8 was a bit worse. Windows 8.1, which is what I'm running now, will run the game efficiently, but still has issues. Windows 10 ran FO4 much more efficiently and stable, but had other issues with Skyrim and NV.

Sp, to try and answer your question, I would say that Windows 7 and up, each has issues, but 10 seems to manage FO4 much more efficiently. So, it's all in your personal taste of which is better. Which suits you and your system itself.

Haven't tried FO4 yet, but for the rest I'd probably say Windows 7. Windows 8/8.1 should behave more or less similarly, but will introduce compatibility issues with older games (Oblivion should be new enough to be okay though), due to the deprecation of a number of features (and truth is you shouldn't be using "Windows 8" - it's horribly outdated and not supported; if you're going with 8, it should be 8.1, just like 7 should be 7 SP1). 10 is supposed to have lowered system requirements but it's also brand spanking new (which means can of worms), forces driver updates (which can/will break things at the drop of a hat), and has huge unanswered security and privacy questions.

Speaking of "newness" that's another reason I'd pick 7 - its overwhelming popular and widespread, so the majority of people you may be asking for help, reading guides from, etc will be coming from 7; that can be useful.

I'm currently using win 10 64bit and it runs perfectly. Better than win 8. The only game from the ones you mentioned that has issues is fallout 3. It crashes randomly when I enter buildings and even when I run the game at max resolution/fullscreen I get an annoying border around the screen. The border problem is fixed when I run the game without the launcher in win vista compatibility mode but I still can't fix the crashes.

Did you remember to apply the ini fixes for multi-core/multi-CPU systems? IME that fixes most "out of the box" crashes in FO3, but it doesn't apply them by default.
