I've just looked at Oblivion graphics extender mod, because my bro is buying a new video card very soon, probably before the end of this week. Anyway, I haven't even opened Oblivion since 2 years ago... I just got to say wow. Wow, how much the graphics are extended, and that screenshot of parallax + occlusion mapping on cobblestone. What is that? I mean, is that even possible? I didn't even think so, but it looks like I can soon look at that in game next week.

So, yeah, I was wondering if all effects could be applied to Skyrim with Skyrim's graphics extender? What do you think, I mean it's a new engine with more capabilities. In the videos you could have even seen clouds around mountaintops moving very realistically. What else do you think might be possible?

They probably included that technology in Skyrim, because It was developed after Oblivion, or at least it was not available to them during Oblivion development. Which is why you saw it in a mod. They most likely used all graphics capabilities they could.

There definitely will be a SGE, that's for sure, but probably only in about five years or so, like with Morrowind and Oblivion. The real question is: can we even imagine what it will add?

A Skyrim Graphics or Script extender may be impossible due to certain DRM policies that Skyrim is using.

Just so it's in this thread as I haven't seen this mentioned yet... one of the common points that's been brought up about Steam modding compatibility is that Valve assisted the OBSE team to get OBSE working with the Steam version of Oblivion. This was, for the modding community, absolutely essential, as OBSE is arguably the most important "mod" ever made. Without it, other top-rated mods such as Deadly Reflex couldn't exist nor thousands of others as they would be constrained to Oblivion's very limited scripting. As well, because of how OBSE works it enables the mod community to patch or alter the EXE without actually changing it (as it's patched in memory.)

However, SteamWorks titles all now seem to use Custom Executable Generation. ianpatt, the founder of OBSE, has noted that if Skyrim uses CEG, it may be difficult or impossible to get a Skyrim Script Extender written with or without Valve's assistance. This would be very bad news for modders and players alike.

I suggested that he should pass this on to the devs by way of GStaff (which he did...) Let's hope they are listening.

I'm hoping it just means we can use one of the cracks that will come out before the game actually releases (GG anti-piracy) to circumvent this.

Hmm... If Valve assisted the OBSE team to get it working with Oblivion (and if NVSE worked with New Vegas), I don't see why they wouldn't do the same with Skyrim. If they wouldn't though, it would be a very sad day.

Great news. I'm surprised it's taken this long to get confirmation on that. It must be one of those things that is implemented for one reason but affects another totally different aspect.
