BOSS - Better Oblivion Sorting Software for Skyrim

A "one-click" program for users that quickly optimises and avoids detrimental conflicts in their TES IV: Oblivion, Nehrim - At Fate's Edge, TES V: Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas mod load orders.

You should name it better skyrim sorting software (BSSS) or Skyrim Mod Sorting (SMS).

Great to hear - thanks for working on this I'm sure it will be appreciated by everyone and in time will be an invaluable tool.

"Just plain old BOSS. The qualifier "for Skyrim" is just so people don't wonder why something with Oblivion in its name is in the Skyrim mods section, same as for the other games it supports. The program is exactly the same over all the games, only the masterlist differs." Thought I'd share why it is staying "BOSS".

I have a question on the installation. I'm using the HTML instructions and I think they tell me to install to the "Skyrim" folder. When I do this, however, I get an error because BOSS can't find the Skyrim.esm file. The error says "Critical error, no game master .esm file found." I thought that .esm files always go in the Data file, so I extracted there and it seems to run fine. Here's the language that I found confusing: "Extract the BOSS archive you downloaded to your game's installation directory (ie. the one containing the Data folder and the game's executable ....)" I'm hoping that I ended up with the application in the right folder, and I'm just looking for some confirmation. Thanks for putting this up, by the way. This follows a great tradition of must-have utilities for the Bethesda games. Endorsing as soon as the hour runs out.

I seem to have packaged the mod wrongly - the files in the archive should be in a BOSS folder in your Skyrim folder - the manual archive should have the files (BOSS.exe, etc.) in a BOSS folder for you to drag into your Skyrim folder.

Just create a BOSS folder yourself and put the BOSS files in that folder. Apologies for the confusion.

Soo... yeah. The BOSS didn't recognize a single mod in my mod folder. Tells me to do the load order myself. I thought that was the whole point of the program? Fail.

No, BOSS tells you to report your unrecognised plugins so that in future they may be sorted by BOSS for everyone, saving you and countless others the bother. The only failure is yours, for failing to do as requested in the ReadMe, and not providing the little information the team requires.

Then, as I have said above, report those unknowns.

BOSS is a community project spanning multiple games. The BOSS team requires people to tell them what is unrecognised so that they can add those mods to the Skyrim masterlist. It's not a lot, just post the plugin filenames and the links to where you got them in the official thread. If nobody can even be bothered doing that, then the community is just shooting itself in the foot...

Also, the modder tools that the team use to look into mods to decide where they should load haven't been released yet, and we don't want to use tools that were not designed for Skyrim, as they may provide incorrect information.
