Setting the sound to 24 bit, 44100 hz solved the stutterring for me.

A tip: To change the volume of your computer you have to EXIT the game and change it, and then start the game again.

I think I've worked out the problem for people with low sound. This doesn't help with stuttering or crashing.

I remember this being an issue with Oblivion too, in that the game does not recognise volume changes when issued through the keyboard volume buttons (top right corner of keyboard). I'm not sure if it's just my crappy Medion keyboard but the rubber buttons don't alter the sound. In Skyrim, however, it appears that if you have previously lowered the sound using these buttons before you launched, the game sets this volume as the max, and turning up your speakers doesn't help much.

So, the solution is simply to exit the game and use the keyboard buttons to max out the sound, or you can left-click on the volume control icon and make sure the slider bar for your sound card and speakers is set to full. If no slider bars appear, you need to right-click the volume icon and select 'volume control options', and place a check mark next to your speakers and sound card, then try again.

I'm using Win 7. I have a SB Audigy card, which didn't have any stuttering issues, just the low sound which is now fixed.

Personally if I turn everything up via the volume control settings then everything else is too loud, it just isn't a viable option. The solution is for Bethesda to patch the game to fix this issue along with countless other ones (shadow quality being tied to distance being a big one).

i don't have an enchantment tab so it doesn't work with me, i don't have any shuttering sound but low volume is really annoying.
i normally just need 25% of my speakers volume, now i need around 60%.......talk about low volume....

if you have a Creative Audigy or similar the issue is Win7/8 + older Creative cards due to the changed sound processing.

SET SPDIF as Default Device , even if you don't use it.

continue with using analogue output - all works perfect after that

but no matter what, Skyrim has low volume for whatever reason (on any soundcard compared to other games)

i used DFX to boost the volume - all is good.
