So I've gone the entire day without playing Skyrim, spent 5 hours searching for solutions, and about to just give up.

The story is Skyrim will launch off steam, then continue to play Bethesda's logo with nice sound, then suddenly as it disappears a dragon logo appears in the middle of the screen, sound stops, and Skyrim becomes unresponsive. The game's process has to be ended through task manager or a complete computer restart. I updated to the most recent graphic drivers for my graphics card, intalled the latest directx update. Nothing is working.

I run on Windows XP also.

See here:

Seems to be a fix for everyone else.

The linked fix does not work for XP as there is no way to adjust the audio output like that.
disabling hardware acceleration or lowering the sample rate conversion quality does NOT work.
Please someone stop rehashing the windows 7 fix and give us a Windows XP fix.

Alright, I'm also using XP (SP3) and Skyrim runs only after a clean restart of the computer. I tried setting the Audio to different frequencies (could not switch bit rate on XP as OP said) but nothing worked. The game refused to start unless I just restarted the computer. I played around with the 'SkyrimPrefs.ini' and got it to work twice without rebooting. Still had to wait a solid minute or so on the Dragon Medallion screen, and I thought it wasn't working, but it finally did start. Also, got CCleaner to clean my registry, I saw a bunch of Skyrim references there.

Try replacing SkyrimPrefs.ini in 'My Documents\My games\Skyrim\' with this, might work for you. I still have trouble with the LOD, Objects and Textures don't update when I get close, the only way to fix this is to wait a few minutes near the place for everything to load (FPS doesn't drop in that time, running on high/custom) OR just fast travelling, which I was hoping to avoid.

P.S.: If it seems like it's frozen, try ALT-TAB-ing, it should minimize the game (unlike before, where it would just be on top of everything) and ALT-TAB back in, should be loaded.

I tried running it immediately after a restart, and still had no luck. Tried putting what you had in my SkyrimPrefs.ini, and had no luck after that either. I waited around 10 minutes on each attempt. C'mon Bethesda. I didn't pay $60 to not be able to play the game.

EDIT (like 30 seconds later): NEVER MIND, IT WORKED. I LOVE YOU DLBG. (<-- caps for extra excitement and love  )

dlbg it worked! Dude I'm amazed! Thanks a lot!! I had to turn the resolution down to 1440x900 because my display didn't support it.

BUT SERIOUSLY, you're a life saver!!

EDIT: It's not too easy to get it running. It takes me a clean restart to get it started.

It worked for me until I exited the game. Now I'm back to square 1 and can't get it to work again.

Once I exited the game I couldn't get back on even after 5 or so restarts. If the game manages to downsize then I know it will work. But whenever task manager is pulled up it just blinks like it did before. This is a really difficult to use fix, but it definitely worked.

After all this trouble and I still can't get it to work I'm starting to think we just need them to make a patch for this or something.
