Okay, I need this explaining to me... After seeing all of the minimum and recommended system requirements to play this game at its best, I'm pretty annoyed that I have to play it on low, yes LOW settings to avoid any lag.
Here are my system specs, of the new Alienware m17x laptop I just bought..
intel Core i7 2670QM 2.2Ghz (3.1ghz with turbo boost)
1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
8GB Dual channel DDR3 at 1600mhz (4DIMMS)
is that really not good enough? Is there anything I can do, except despair?
Thanks
DF

With some alienwares you must manually turn on your turbo boost by a button. make sure its turned on.
If you have it running at 2 ghz it will lag

Well, your video card is fine. Unfortunately, currently it doesn't really matter; Skyrim is extremely CPU intensive, so you need a very beefy CPU to handle it.
Also, I've heard that people with more than dual-cores are having trouble with Skyrim not utilizing all the power, so you might have some problems there.
Try fiddling around with SkyrimPrefs.ini in: My Documents>My Games>Skyrim. There are a lot of settings the launcher doesn't help with in there
