I meant no hostility if you understood it as such, let's just start with that
Plus, the meat of the point here is: Leather is supercheap and plentiful. Just that allows you to spamlevel Smithing up to obscene levels, even if you actually hunt for it like I try to do.
I just think fixing the exp gain on the items themselves rather than the overall skill gain would make for a far better Smithing experience in general. Tweaking every item would be a pain in the ass so perhaps the higher the tier, the higher the exp gain (leather gives a pittance, iron gives more and higher and higher we go).
I'd like to not use them but they are there as they are and it's poor game design to force the player to deny himself access to something so the game isn't a pushover (coming back to the fact I had to gimp myself with no weapons and haphazard low-level armour to have a challenge)
