Ok, so the other night I downloaded some HD textures which promptly turned a lot of things in skyrim pink. After looking through this forum, I found I needed to download the 4gb launcher. I did that and it fixed the pink dragons/trees/Khajit tails/etc. However, now something strange is happening to my sound. For whatever reason a large majority of my sound effects are not working (lock pick sounds don't work at all). Some work fine like opening doors and the wind but others are non existant. Also, when people talk to me most of the time they are either very muffled (vendors) or completely distorted (daedra/peryite). I have seen on some other forums that there has been a sound issue depending on what you have your sounds set on in windows. I have it set on the suggested selection and have played around with some other settings as well to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you updated to 1.2 the sound problem was fixed and the higher setting is recommended. It may or may not solve your issue however.

I did upgrade to 1.2 and my default was the higher setting. My problem didn't happen until after the 1.2 upgrade and the first time I loaded the game with the 4 gb launcher. Also, if I load it the regular way (non -4gb launcher) it does the same thing. Also noticed that when talking to an npc, sometimes the sound get's better/normal if I turn my head from them.

Fixed the problem last night. Wanted to make sure everyone saw the solution. I have Realtek audio. One solution that a lot of people were saying on the bethesda forums was to force your computer to play in surround sound and then disable all speakers except your left and right speakers. I tried this but to no avail. However, this seemed to work for 90% of the people on the forums.

I had all but given up when I noticed that there was an option to enable/disable "Virtual Surround". It was enabled so I figured I would try disabling and SHAZAM! That is what did it for me.
