Well... killing Umbra might help get rid of the Umbra quest? ;P
Apart from that, there's no journal entry, or variable set, when he dies as far as I can see. You'll just have to choose to kill him, and that should end the quest...

Did you read my pinned note in spoilers? The only way to remove the journal entry is to refuse to kill him then reopen the dialogue box and agree to kill him the second time. If you use the console you can delete the whole quest (so it does not show at all) but you cannot 'complete' it via the console.

www.elricm.com lists console commands for all the quests I believe.

okay..so what do i type in the console to remove quest entries from my journal? like i said, im too far in the game to bother to load back and kill him like the way you said..eurgh. and now skink wont give me any quests cos Edwinna never asked me to get the potion from him..cos i found the Chi-whats-its-name book at the temple and spoke to Edwinna, so she thinks i did all the other quests that she gives (i.e the potion quest and the chronicles of nchuleft quest) and accordingly asked me to return the book to its original owner before she realises its missing. SIGH. thanks, you guys for replying. Really appreciate it =)

There's no console command to remove entries from your journal. However, you can modify the journal as a text file out-of-game. Look for the journal file in the Morrowind Files- I think it's either in Data Files or Saves. I would just cut the text out of the journal at first- if it works, keep it. If it doesn't, you can paste it back in.
Here is a thread explaining what to do to avoid/correct those open quests.

Or PlaceAtPC "Umbra" 1 1 1 1
I had to do this with the Dreamer Prophet yesterday, for some reason the guy in charge of the Office ot the Watch thought I hadn't killed her...ended up fighting her IN the Office. That worked fine. P.S. If you are enough of a purist to not want a second Umbra Sword lying around, drop it, open the console, click on it, and type DISABLE.
