unfortunately a clean new install is out of the question for me cuz my disc broke about two weeks ago and I only have internet on my phone up here in the mountains so I couldn't even download a backup copy if I wanted to. T.T

Once you install it with Steam once you shouldn't need the disc again, you should be able to reinstall it through Steam... that's what I do when I reinstall anyway, I haven't used my own disc since I first bought the game on the first day it was released.
My game crashes all the time now too, I hope they fix whatever problems they created (again).

I had CTD issues with the patch 1.4 and SKSE 1.4.08 I believe, but then I got the new SKSE (1.4.10) and the issues seem to have been resolved.

I didnt buy on steam so how do I update??????????
Even if you bought your copy from a retail store, you will still need to use Steam to update the game. Once Steam detects a new patch, it will download it automatically, and update your game.

How do you update it to 1.4 on steam?

steam should auto update if you haven't disabled it.
and as for my ctd issue turns out both 1.4.08 and 1.4.09 of skse were the issue. went to dose 1.4.10 and it hasn't crashed all day yay I is a happy nerd LOL.

*update* I may possibly stand corrected. It appears that a instance of TESV.exe was preventing the mods from being installed. I will have to investigate this further to see if that was the real problem
I think I have solved my CTD problem with 1.4 but it has come with a startling realization: Bethesda has disabled nearly all mods that are not simple texture/mesh replacers. Standalone craftable armour and weapon mods no longer install with NMM. Deadly Dragons appears to be incompatible and and mods that change magic, werewolves, vampires etc have become non-operable.
I assume this is Bethesda's way of forcing everyone to use the CK, but really? Just break our games why don't you?
