Im seeing a problem with Bethesdas DLC strategy in Skyrim.

Why should i buy something that can actually be done way better by the modding community?

Just a thought <img src='http://forums.nexusm..._DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Problem is that Bethesda isn't giving us all the tools necessary. They have the source code, the dev tools (like the "complete" CK), etc. and what we get is a toolkit which has been gimped down. From what I've heard, you can't create new perk trees, weapon types, flow-based shaders, anything that might take a bit of effort beyond, say... creating your own landscape/worldspace. And they did all those here in this video, in apparently just a week, which is even more baffling (even though they may be littered with bugs at the moment). The motive behind this is I'm guessing they don't want us to completely out-do any possible DLC they plan to release in the future, so that any official content is always more valuable than content that is made by the community. And so far, it's worked... Or, they may just not want console users to feel too disadvantaged.

Why they wont release stuff like the shader sources is beyond me. Its not like they have their "competitive edge" against other RPGs in graphics you know... (plus they released the sources for all their scripts already)

"What if they know how to make the less dynamic dynamic shadows implementation of the last decade!?"

"What if they find that we copied the water shader from Unreal 2!?"

"What if they find that the HDR is fake... AGAIN, but in the code this time!?"

Its not like ppl would accept that they start to cash in from graphical enchancement mods. I mean, i'd be mad at them if they wanted to charge me for the water shader, its like if they charged for having Havok working ingame, or for bump maps lol

"High settings with 2x AA DLC is expected for march, the price is 10 usd"

For example, there have been numerous shader mods for the STALKER series. And im not talking bout injectors (actually, ENB had little success there), just ppl writing shaders for the game, or making better the ones that already existed. Imagine the stuff that could be made with a modder community like the one that TES has? We'd seeing bat sht crazy stuff (like if we didnt already :P )

I'm pretty disappointed with the ghosts in skyrim, I remembered in oblivion- dungeons were actually creepy but now their just ethereal beings that repeat the same damn two lines over and over again. "im sry" "im sry" "i dont wanna do this" "im sry" "no, i dont want to do this" " im sry"

I think those lines are there because those ghosts are specifically tied into a quest in that area. I haven't seen ghosts do that all over Skryim, have you? I've only seen it in that one area north of Whiterun, I think.

Also, has anybody tried implementing the Creation Kit with SKSE? I can't remember how I did it with Oblivion's Construction Set and OBSE, but if it's possible to do the same in Skyrim, then I bet that we could be doing a whole lot more.

Look at it like this: You're tasked to make in three days the best game you can make. You even have a small team of people to help you on it. Within those three days, you have to produce sound, art, lines upon lines of code, and at some point you HAVE TO play test the game. You want it to be good. So is your game going to have 80 hours of awesome story-line? Over the top detailed models? What do you think you and your small team can accomplish with only 3 days time?

The point is this, you're game won't have everything under the sun in it even if you know that if you had more time it could come close to it. Game design is a world of deadlines if you're going to do it professionally, so while some of that stuff we saw could've been in the game, you're also looking at probably a couple of weeks to a month per each new feature to be implemented, thoroughly integrated, and above all play tested. That means yeah, it would have been in the game, but the game woulda been released probably a year later (And if they did, that would have meant another year without a new product for which to generate an income for the company to pay it's work force with). So you have to make cuts to meet those deadlines, and you try to cut only the superfluous stuff that, while nice, don't "have" to be there to call the game finished. It's not done to cheat us, the consumer, but rather it's done simply to leave time for the bigger priorities.

So to sum up, it needs to be carefully balanced between quality and quantity. Skyrim might not be a perfect game, but it's a damn good one. There might be some bugged features, but there are some really awesome ones too. They even made the game modable, so what's the complaint if a weekend modder takes time to tidy up bits here or there? As for the extra stuff our wonderful mod community puts out, that's really all that it is; Extra fun stuff, that may or may not meet with everyone's tastes.

Anyway, awesome vid, can't wait to see what comes of it over the next few months :)

My beef with "ghost" in skyrim is they turn to a pile of ash and have loot... Excuse me mr. ghost I'm going to pick pocket your ethereal pants and sneak away with non-ethereal iron gauntlets.... ok.

- Building of your own home (with skeletal butler).
- Mounted combat.
- Dragon mounts.

I wonder where they got those ideas from :P

And they will want money for something that was invented by the comunity, and just added into DLC. If they start acting like Activision then I'm out. Also game was f***ed up since release, and so they gave us HD texture pack with was also bugged, and community have to fix it. This new DLC should be free as it not gving us any new content like it was in oblivion, it just adding something that should be in such a big game. Based on new engine...

I like most of this content in description but they better add it in new patch with some fixes. For console users it will be a good DLC since they can not use mods, but i want big DLC such as High Rock with arena in it.
