How about when you enter the vertibird, you first come to the interior of it, and then inside that you can "sit" in a chair (a disguised activator") to enter the cockpit like it is now.
And you could make it so entering from the front end of the vertibird puts you directly in the cockpit
You can probably use the normal vertibird interior, it should be included in fallout new vegas, it's under the name of dlc3vertibirdinterior or something, otherwise can't you use this one:?

EDIT:
the textures for the interior is in fallout-textures.bsa
Actually with the tank suggestion, if you want a tank that we all know, it would have to be developed before the end of WWII, as after that war the divergence occurs(Where fallout history and real world history split off).
Anyhoo, if you do make a drivable tank version, I'd Love to drive around in a Panzer IV. Maybe one with Armored Skirts.
The chimers tank was not a tank it was a mining rig with a laser strapped to the top by the Chinese..
but its possible... but in FOT that had a Sherman thank used by the BOS and the play could drive that. now that would be awesome and us same gun that's already on the XRE.
But dont add any weapons to it instead add placement makers around the XRE to add a weapon like how u raised the B-29 from the lake. that way people can add missile, rockets , nades, or more guns. that would be awesome put 4 red glare on it lol over kill much.

Strange decision, considering the Panzer IV wasn't exactly common even in its heyday (German tank formations were *much* smaller than their opponents, mostly for production reasons. As well as material shortages their vehicles were advanced for the era and very over-engineered in some aspects). As such, doesn't seem like something that would've survived 140 years of peace, a nuclear apocalypse and 200 years of neglect. As cool a design as it is, it didn't exist in the US in enough numbers to survive as a museum piece, much less a combat capable vehicle. Though I can think of far worse choices, if prompted (M1 Abrams, Leopard 2, any other 'modern' vehicle more contemporary than a late-model M48 Patton).
The items I'm requesting (provided its possible)
IFF targeting system; basically something that lets me know I'm targeting a friendly when I'm engaging enemies.
A fast rope option, when companion are with me I'd like to deploy them into battle via fast rope insertion.
Fuel Air Bomb (FAB). Some choppers can utilize these devastating weapons. If possible I'd like to equip some FABs on the vertibird.
Thank you for making this mod and for sharing it with us.
IFF (imagespace modifier copied from boone's spotter perk?) would be nice, preferably on a hotkey like the nightvision.
Fast roping is a silly idea. You're the pilot, that'd be like the pilot jumping out with the paratroopers from a C130.
Bombs would be interesting, vertibirds do some bombing in Fallout 3 at points, IIRC. Would make sense seeings as they're VTOLS that fill all the transport and fire support roles previously filled by helicopters and light jets (for the Enclave anyway).

Why not just a chimera tank?
They aren't really from the ww2 era, but they are indeed one of the tanks that are officially in the fallout universe
Because I'd wager those meshes and textures aren't in the new vegas file archicves, which would make using them illegal. Because the Chimera is only really suitable for snowy/boggy ground. Faced with a solid surface like a road or hard rocky desert like the mojave... Well... You're going to doubt this but, it'd go sideways. Seriously, here's a video of a soviet prototype showing this:
just checked, and the chimera meshes and texures are in new vegas, fallout-meshes.bsa, and fallout-textures.bsa.
However, good point about the corkscrew design, i never even thought of that.
Well, i don't really care about tanks anyway, what i want most atm is have an interior and some sort of upgrading system, like using sensor modules and various stuff to get an IFF system as suggested earlier
