No reason to NOT use this mod. I'm running Skyrim on a 2008-ish Gateway.
Radeon HD 2400 XT (256MB...I know, below even minimum specs)
3GB RAM
AMD Phenom 2.2 Quad-Core
Windows XP-32
Using high default settings with the textures cranked back to Medium, AA/FXAA disabled, Anisotropic Filering off, Radial Blur low, Shadow Detail low, no Decals, water reflects only sky, 1360x768 full screen.
12+ FPS per FRAPS everywhere (even in Whiterun). Believe it or not, the game plays quite well. I haven't yet had a combat issue due to low FPS. My dumb fingers, however....
When I get some unbespoke cash I plan to upgrade to 4GB RAM (max supported) and a 1GB nVidia. Should do nicely.
EDIT: BTW, I had a ZERO drop in FPS after installing SMIM. Needless to say I'm not using the highest res options with only 256MB to play with.
