@pavy, If it were on Skyrims engine I wouldn't worry about graphics as the modding community would come up with something stunning.
Its easier for modders to make tweaks & create mods on the Gamebryo/Creation engine, the SWTOR engine is difficult & perplexing.
First ESO screenshot creates a largely negative reaction

"[...]after how gorgeous Skyrim was, this looks like an insult,[...]"
First of all: MMORPGs are NEVER pretty. For one thing, even GW2 is technically far behind BF3. You can't seriously have the demand that the graphics of Skyrim and ESO should be equal.
Secondly: In my opinion you cannot call Skyrim "gorgeous" (ENB left aside - its no original part of the game, anyway). This would be an insult to all the games with really georgeous graphics.
Thirdly: Never judge a book by its cover and also never judge a game solely by its graphics .

@quaddamage21
Yeah i see now, sorry i wasnt aware there were mmos using that engine...i was thinking the gamebryo is a buggy mess, but forgot it was because of beths coding mostly.
@AkasunaNoSuzaku
Well Tera looks fairly gorgeous from what i saw...or Archeage, but i agree that people judge games too quickly just because the graphics arent shiny, in the end the gameplay is what makes a game, game.

Wow, I have been a TES fanboy since Morrowind... and I have supported each game and expansion since then.. but this seriously just looks like a typical generic low res mmorpg, sure we are not expecting Skyrim but at least something state of the art looking. However Games should not be judged by its graphic, what it should be judged on is the game play/features/animations/story and all the other meat inside. I recently started playing Rift and I must say, it has a lot of nice features, like the open ended of sorts skill trees and stuff, so who know maybe ESO could have some kick ass features (and an optional Hi-Res Texture Pack) that will make it quite good.
Other then all that it would have been better for them to work on the next TES or someone implement a small multiplayer feature for Skyrim, maybe like borderlands with the drop in/drop out but you would be able to be in other areas or something because in all honesty there is enough MMO on the market and some that are still coming out. Beth should stick with the single player experience and maybe branch from that and add some small multiplayer aspects

To commentators that have stated that MMO's need lower system requirements to play.
I understand your reasoning, but there is a reason why we have the option to set our graphics to whatever we want.
They could easily make one of the best looking games and yet still cater to the lower end machines by making options for low textures, no shadows etc.
This is why we have graphical options. So that people who do have high end computers can enjoy the game with incredible graphics and for people with low end machines can easily play the game by lowering their graphic settings.
Why in the world cant we have the best of both worlds.

Besides the poor graphics, based on the screenshot, it looks like wizards/sorcerers/mages need wands to effectively function as their respective classes. I'm not sure about this. THIS DOESN'T HAVE A TES FEEL.
You should've listened to Todd Howard when he said he didn't want TES to go towards an MMO route.

"Well, from graphics alone, this game will be total garbage." Seriously? Looks like a beta screenshot of Morrowind? Please, Morrowind wishes it could say that. So many people are overreacting to this for no reason. Graphics are cartoony? Ok, tell me, what do you call Oblivion? It looks like a game world made from plastic. Shiny plastic at that. That said, I absolutely love Oblivion! I now call myself a PC gamer because of Oblivion, it was that good. I honestly don't mind the graphics in this, one, because I don't mind a cartoony look if the game is still fun and two, because graphics don't make a game. As long as they achieve a cohesive atmosphere and don't look like the graphically worst N64/PS1 game, I don't have a problem with it. I do agree an option for higher poly and res would be very nice, because options are always nice no matter what, but it's the core gameplay I care about moreso. I worried about graphics when I was 12, I've come to appreciate what matters in the game today. ESO might totally suck, but just because you don't need a prototype GTX 980 to play it doesn't mean it can't be a fun game.

@pavy:
I maybe exaggerated things a bit. Tera and Archeage do definately look good, but nevertheless you can tell at the first glance that they are MMORPGs (textures, character models, etc).
And Skyrim is pretty, too, maybe even Top 10 in video games, but especially among these there are still big discrepancies. However, I'm fine with how Bethesda chose their priorities.
BTW: The biggest problem about ESO is probably that it is developed by ZeniMax. I got no resentment against them, but it is like Disney would produce Sin City 2 and you wonder why it has gotten so cheerful...

All the people complaining about the graphics have obviously never played an MMORPG before..........
