Prepping a nif for import into blender is super easy. You just delete the materials (BSLightingShaderProperty) and then under "NiHeader" change
user version to "11"
and user version 2 to "34". In order to see NiHeader you may have to go to view>block list>show blocks in list
Then save. It's ready for import. Some weapons and more physics objects (cheese wheels, any you can kick across the ground) can be a little more complicated to prep, but armors and bodies are super easy.
An alternative (and much more detailed) tutorial to follow is the one one the nexus wiki.
It's actually a bit better, more fleshed out, and clearer. The only thing is it doesn't list is everything you need, software-wise. So the proper list is found in the slightly less good tutorial.
Blender
For general mesh building/editing, it's important to know some basic things about blender.
The getting started with blender tutorials will show you how to start sculpting.
And make use of proportional editing by hitting "o" to toggle it. This is very useful for altering a mesh to fit a particular body because it pulls groups of points at once in a very organic manner.
