Shrine blessings are disabled once you've committed a severe crime like murder, have had a large fine or are a member of a dark organization (brotherhood, thieves guild). The gods no longer wish to bless you in such a case.

I guess it might appear in the trace log somewhere, but I'm not sure where to look

Is there a way to make the mod NOT send you back to the main menu if it detects a problem? I can't start a new game because it keeps sending me back, telling me "Requiem changes a lot of things so you need to start a new game to play it".
I do use LAL, and its esp is located after requiem's. This doesn't make any sense, I have an ongoing character and I managed to play him without a problem with the same set up.
I don't understand what the problem is here. The mod doesn't let me play because it wants me to start a new game, when that's exactly what I did.

"The mod doesn't let me play because it wants me to start a new game, when that's exactly what I did."
That's is contradicting information
Requiem doesn't allow you to continue a character that was made outside of Requiem or with an old version of Requiem, because that would really mess things up. So you have to start a new character.
You should be able to:
1) Restart Skyrim first
2) Create a new character
If that fails, see the troubleshooting guide (first post in this forum).

What I meant was: I have an ongoing character (created for use with Requiem, same version, no problems with that character), and I wanted to make another character under the same circumstances, and I can't proceed because it's telling me I need to start a new character right after I leave the cell LAL puts you in (which doesn't make sense because it IS a new character).
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I have an old character with Requiem installed perfectly but I got bored of it and created a new one and I get the "you must create a new game." I have not made any changes to load order and so it is still at the bottom of my load order and I have installed a few more mods and sorted them with LOOT and I corrected it afterwards. I really like Requiem and would like to fix it but I also like SPERG and can switch back to it if nothing can be done.
Thanks, Mccannpeter

Do you choose a specific new life when leaving the cell and if so, which one? Or did you try other alternatives as well?

New game not recognized as such
If Requiem complains about you not having started a new game, despite having done so, it's most likely an issue of a mod modifying the initial game time. The main suspect is Wet & Cold - Holidays, just disable the randomized starting date and you should be fine. Another possibility is that you spent too much time configuring your mods before starting the game. Please initialize the Requiem scripts first, afterwards you have all the time you need to configure your other mods.
