I finished the DG MQ and now I miss those vampire attacks. I liked traveling to the towns and hoping that an attack would occur. It was usually chaos trying to single out the vampires, and it was very satisfying when you successfully killed them without a loss to the townspeople.

I may go back to a save right before I finished it just so this feature comes back.

I enjoyed the encounters myself...but not the named NPC losses.

I'm not gonna add to the argument as to whether vampire attacks are a game killer or not
though I think there is room for tweaking, if someone had the desire to do so

two globalvars seem relatively insteresting for that :
DLC1RadiantDisguisedVampireLordChance 25
and
DLC1VQMinLevelVampireAttacks 8

use "show" and "set" as usual

a bit off topic I know but still since this is a single player game one may do as he or she wishes ...

i played all the way through as a dawnguard member without any problems, yet since ive started a new game as a vampire ive had crash after crash, fixed a few problems only to hit even more just an hour ago i had to roll back 7 hours of saves because the saves after a certain quest are fecked lol,how can bethesda release such a buggy DLC its crazy the best game in many years and they are gonna feckin destroy it ,ive now installed the unofficial dawnguard patch thats supposed to fix a lot of bugs but im not holding my breath .
what really gets me is ive not had the same number of problems on the 360 version,is it the creation kit /mods thats the problem

If you don't wont certain players to die from the random vampire attacks, your only option is to set your favorite NPC's essential, there ID ref numbers can be found at the wiki's and I posted my list I used several times on the forums here, you just got to know how to use bat batch files in console command

Update

I updated my guard lists to include a non essential list for when I wont to feed as a wolf

the essential list for guards

caution this list use at your own risk, makes field commanders both sides non essential, some field commanders give quests,I left out commanders in jarl buildings

Dawnguard isn't that buggy. Your mods are causing it.

just got an attack at lvl 10 on a small settlement (thought the vampire attacks were only for the main towns but apparently not. at first I thought OMG a "master" vampire I'm gonna get ...
hu what ? he's dead ? hu ok ....
he & his cohorts were quickly dispatched by me (of very little help) and them

that was on master difficulty so the guards are probably stronger than other difficulties, no other mods that impact guards & "monsters"

I find it more of a nuisance then anything. I stepped out of the apothecary in Whiterun only to turn and find Vamps trashing the entrance. By the time I got over there, the smithing chick was dead. Had to reload and run over to wipe them out.

It would certainly help keep a lot of citizens alive if the game took the time of day into account when spawning NPCs as you enter a city. It doesn't make sense to me that you can enter a city at, say, 3:00 am and find all of the usual NPCs wandering around, including children. If you were to enter the city during the day and just wait until 3:00 am, they'd all be safely indoors except for guards and drunks.

Whilst no-one denys that mods can cause problems, it would be wrong to say that Dawnguard isn't all that buggy, and even Bethesda have admitted that it has known issues in their reply to my support request. I am fortunate enough to have two PC's, one of which is a high spec gaming laptop, so after having such issues on the version on my desktop PC I did a clean mod free install on my laptop and tried dawnguard with a vanilla race character. I STILL had that same issue in the Vamp Lord Tutorial where I couldn't land when Harkon says to, no matter how hard I mashed the CTRL key. Even Bethesda agree with me that is a game breaker.

You make a good point there, some tinkering with the AI packages might be in order.

I updated my lists for merchants to include non-essential, the reason I had to make a non essential merchant list was because Nazir [dark brotherhood] had a contract out for Anoriath in whiterun and he was in my merchant essential list, so I edit in the 0 and made a non essential merchant list, I named my non essential bat text file nonmerch, name yours whatever is easier to remember

What I mean by editing in a 0 was that I back spaced out the 1 and added a zero because using the text search features and telling it to replace the 1 with 0 would have replaced all 1 with 0 corrupting the list, so it took 30 minutes to edit in a 0 and make the non essential list

My merchant list include blacksmiths at both imperial and stormclark camps

essential merchant list
