Dawnguard keeps freezing

DO you guys recommend a new game for dawnguard?

I'm currently using a lvl 20 character that is constantly crashing my video driver.

My driver has NEVER crashed before dwanguard, just occasional CTDs.

vinh834, if you updated to patch v1.7, hopefully you backed up Skyrim beforehand and

can try rolling your game back to patch v1.6 (swap the tesv.exe).

Are you running mods that add player homes/locations or overhaul game skill/perk systems?

Any mods that run intrusive scripts that are not compatible with Dawnguard?

Personally I think you will have a better experience with Downguard if you start a new game...from fresh.

Experience what they have put in....and if you later want to try out some of the other mod....don't put them in all at once...but one by one with some playingtime between.

BUT!...before you put in any of these mods....save you game...and make a notice....and do the same each time you put in new mods....then you have a point to go back to if it start to get fuzzy :)

......and be very restrictive if you use console command.....or cheat command....

vinh834, if you're getting constant crashes (which suks) i'd get rid of all those mods if you still can

and see if that solves your stability issues; or, do what Rhutobello suggested and

start over with a clean game install and stay away from fancy mods.

It doesn't take long to get back up to level 20.

Are you sure you've configured all your graphics settings properly or are not pushing your hardware too hard?

The driver crash only started happening with dawnguard.

My graphics driver has never crashed ever since I got this PC. Until dawnguard.

I unloaded most of my mods but it still happens.

vinh834, are the 'crashes' random or do these occur when you're about to do something

or transition to a new location.

Is your 7690M XT GPU getting enough cooling? I'm guessing you have an HP Pavilion-Envy laptop.

This model GPU is known to have driver support issues (this is NOT an official AMD card so they don't support it).

http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/662880-hp-support-issues-requesting-help-7690xt-video-card-flawed.html

I understand that HP has been unresponsive regarding issues with this 3rd party GPU.

Do you play any other graphics intensive games that crash?

What do you mean by 'crashes', CTD (crash to desktop) or freeze (Skyrim/OS locks requiring reboot)?

What animation mod files (.HKX) did you install? I'd suggest getting rid (manually uninstall) ALL your mods.

Did you tweak any INI settings?

Do you use autosave? (turn this OFF), you might be dealing with a corrupted gamesave.

If you try loading a earlier gamesave do the crashes still happen?

Paste the contents of your DLCList.txt here which is a list of active mod plugins you have that use ESP/ESM files.

(search for it in your systemdrive).

I'm using leshcat's drivers, which from my observations are far more stable than any other drivers out there HP, and AMD.

I never had a problem with any game with this driver before. When I mean crashes, they are not the usual Skyrim CTD with mods, but graphics driver crashes. This crash has never happened before.

I play other games like The Witcher 2 with near max setting with no crashes ever.

I did not tweak any .ini settings. I decided to do a fresh install of skyrim about 10 minutes ago and have no played or installed any mods yet.

I'm using player animation mods like the walking animation and combat/sitting.

Here is the DLC list, note, i had about 1/4 of them disabled.

vinh834, cool, hope you backed up and completely removed all traces of your previous Skyrim install folders

before performing a fresh install; otherwise, there's a chance all sorts of previous loose files/scripts from mods

remained.

Looking at your previous mod plugins list, I would kindly point out that you're probably expecting too much from

Skyrim v1.7 w/Dawnguard to function normally, it's a biggish list and i think some of those mods are known to have

potential compatibility issues with Dawnguard's files and maybe eachother.

I'll bet Whiterun never looked better though! lol.

As you know, you've got a lot of mods that add/change stuff in the gameworld/systems which can be problematic.

Honestly, I don't think you could realistically expect Skyrim w/Dawnguard to run smoothly running so many mods.

What little i know about Leshcat's drivers and your 7690M XT,

people reported issues with v12.6 and rolled back to v12.3 instead, maybe v12.7 beta is good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been having those same random freezes since I installed Dawnguard ... not right away but after some hours of play it started the freezing frenzy.

I've been researching and experimenting since then and here's what I found:

- It's not from the mods, I started a fresh new game with no mods on just to test this and it still randomly freezes.

- It happens outdoors, in no specific place. It never happened indoors.

- Soul Cairn is the only outdoors area where it never freezed. I've been roaming around it for hours doing all the related quests, no problems.

- Did not install new mods after DG, only updated the ones that offered DG compatibility.

- Updating the graphic drivers seems to help reduce the freezes, but they still happen from time to time. Game got a bit more choppy with Catalyst 12.8 drivers.

Hope this info helps.
