@Kasey: There are mods in the nexus that can make spending gold completely unnecessary... almost completely unnecessary. If it's your first time, though, you might want to using any mod. You wouldn't be able to fully experience the game. I, myself, finished the game a few times over before I started downloading (like crazy).
The Console command runscript zz_money xx (where xx is a number you enter - bear in mind that it delivers xx number of copper coins, and a conversion rate of 1 silver = 100 copper, and 1 gold = 100 silver...so if you want to add 100 gold to your inventory, you use runscript zz_money 1000000) solves all of your cash problems.
I believe this works in Awakenings as well as Origins.

I had the impression that the OP was asking about the value of gold in the game
without cheats.
That's based on the fact that they didn't want to use their wealth to just purchase better armour and weapons, preferring to use what they'd acquired through game-play.
(Once you go to the Dark Side, everything's easy. Maybe too easy!
