I've been playing long enough to amass close to 200 gold.... I only use it to re-stock supplies, preferring to find my armor and weapons in the game.

So, several merchants sell rings, amulets or other items and it got me wondering. What do you guys think is the best way to use the gold?

Or to put it another way, what seems to be worth the price? And is there a real need to accumulate some base level of cash for use somewhere later in the game?

Nope. Unless you use it to buy one of the incredibly expensive doo-dads (e.g. rings, amulets) from The Wonders of Thedas, buffed armour and weapons are the only things it gets you. And, like you, I prefer to find those along the way.

Side Note: There are a few very nice items in Awakening that are ONLY available from merchants. ("Voice of Velvet", for example.) Going into DA:A with a pile of cash makes a number of things easier without (imo) really detracting from the experience. Runecrafting, for example, is tedious enough without having to suddenly deal with a shortage of funds for essential elements. :whistling:

Thanks. That eases my mind a little. I'll "save up" for Awakenings.

@Kasey: There are mods in the nexus that can make spending gold completely unnecessary... almost completely unnecessary. If it's your first time, though, you might want to using any mod. You wouldn't be able to fully experience the game. I, myself, finished the game a few times over before I started downloading (like crazy).

The Console command runscript zz_money xx (where xx is a number you enter - bear in mind that it delivers xx number of copper coins, and a conversion rate of 1 silver = 100 copper, and 1 gold = 100 silver...so if you want to add 100 gold to your inventory, you use runscript zz_money 1000000) solves all of your cash problems. :whistling:

I believe this works in Awakenings as well as Origins.

Now...where's the Command Console for my life...? >.> :wallbash:

I had the impression that the OP was asking about the value of gold in the game without cheats. :whistling:

That's based on the fact that they didn't want to use their wealth to just purchase better armour and weapons, preferring to use what they'd acquired through game-play.

(Once you go to the Dark Side, everything's easy. Maybe too easy! )

I was more reacting to the suggestion that you will find Awakenings a lot easier if you have a load of cash at the start. *shrugs*

As with all console commands - if you don't want to use them, no-one's going to make you. :)

Right, but if you earned that cash in DA:O and carried it with you on to Vigil's Keep it feels a lot different than if you just magiced it into your purse! At least, it does for me. One aspect of role-playing a game that I notice, I guess.

I'm like you Kasey24, equip everyone from what I loot and find, won't buy anything unless I really have to, but there is a belt I like to buy asap, it's called the Archivist's Sash and you buy it at the Wonders of Thedas in Denerim, it only costs about 75 silver and it gives you +50% XP bonus from codex.

Thanks. I'll check that out.
That's the type of answer I was expecting...items that people think are really worth turning loose of a few (or many) coins.

Truth is, I've probably spent 100 gold on flasks and elfroot just to get where I am now (at the Landsmeet).
