I don't think its the view of the game at all. Its how much time the developer devotes to it. Anyone who has played Far Cry 2 or Mirrors Edge, Escape from Butcher's Bay and a handful of other games where you see your arms and hands and even feet when switching spots in a vehicle, taking your malaria pills, reading a map, pulling bullets out of your arm, grabbing ledges, jumping etc. any number of things. Most developers just don't invest anytime in that kind of stuff and that was far more "immersive" than anything I have seen in a third player game. It would be nice if more developers did take that route but at this point seeing my hand actually flip a lightswitch is very low on my criteria for a good game. The only thing that is a big bonus for me and I really wish were in all FPS games is being able to look down and see your body like in Dark Messiah and other games. Regarding realism in combat I definitely want Bethesda to pay more attention to that. Skyrim was an improvement over Oblivon in that regards but still falls short when compared to Mount and Blade Warbands where if you try and use a long weapon at close range you won't do didly squat against the opponent.

As I aways say, Skyrim should take a look on Mount & Blade Warband, many of these flaws doesn't exist there, it pisses me out that the exact moment that I'm going to swing my sword, an so-called-ally step in and block my attack
Both games have it's own flaws, But Bethesda, as big as they are, should at least see this game, to improve hers...
BTW, Warband has even the "place you hit" feature, I mean, if you're not wearing a helmet and I hit you on the head with an sword, you'll take extra damage, don't know if Skyrim has this feature

These shorthand choices by game developers have several causes and effects. For one thing, although it is possible to make the animations for every conceivable action your character can do while in first person, it usually is cheaper to leave it out. It tends to make better gameplay and gives better flow. Video games have come a long way since the 80s and 90s but they are still simplified forms of action. Until they become much more advanced on the techinal side of the development, there will always be repetative or simplified movement. It will only change when public opinion demands a more realistic and believable experience. Even then, there will still be other styles of games. Just as in art, realism or naturalism is not the only form of self expression. There will still be puzzle games, stylized games, and games with tradional styles of play, such as over the head or isometric view. And of course, no matter how realistic video games become, the industry will never implement pain inducing devices or actually kill you when you when you recieve a game over.

@dazzerfong
I think Skyrim has that too. You know, "Press Z to use Shout" I was not amazed as well lol xD

@vineyard
AGREED!

I think he meant the "Press A to..." as in the A button of the Xbox controller because Darksouls for PC is the worst console port EVER PERIOD. (Don't get me wrong, the game is awesome but the PC version is just pure garbage)

Compared to all the other improvements that would add to immersion such as recoginition of your status as a guild leader or the slayer of Alduin and savior of Tamriel, or even more so actual consequences for your actions and choices, this boils down to nothing more than yet another post nitpicking petty issues in my opinion. :rolleyes:

Played Dark Souls and Skyrim and I prefer Skyrim combat in first person view. While it is great to have added realism in a game, 3rd person view doesn't cut it for me (no pun intended) and I find it infuriating how the view changes so drastically (auto zoom of sorts) when you face an object that is closer to the players face (in game that is). I also find it very constricting when I swing a blade and it gets stuck on a wall, post or whatnot, yet (and this is an important factor) the enemies in Dark Souls are not hindered by the same effect. Dark Souls is a fantastic game, albeit stupidly difficult and at times frustrating, but Skyrim is far more enjoyable to play and with the right mods can be not only immersive but just as difficult.

Indeed. But ''Elder Scrolls'' is one of the big boys, has its own fan base. Elder Scrolls games will sell well regardless of how half-assed or non-groundbreaking they are. Just as Diablo 3 will get more recognition than Torchlight 2, though Torchlight 2 is better (and was made by the makers of the original Diablo games..)

such is the gaming industry. Not much we can do. Oh wait yes there is, we mod as much as we can :)

What did you expect? It was never originally intended for PC, and only got on PC because nearly 100,000 people signed a petition. Beggars can't be choosers

expect if you use bows in dark souls, your damn arrows are wasted because they hit invisible walls. there's nothing like trying to snipe an enemy and seeing your arrow hit the invisible walls while the actual wall is 5 feet away also one thing about dark souls, ONLY YOUR ATTACKS BOUNCE OFF WALLS. enemies can hit you through walls. their attacks go through walls like attacks in skyrim. bethesda should add weapon verity and enemy verity like dark souls... i dont know about a locking system or "rolling system" because no one rolls in real combat that and sweeping attacks but skyrim has it already has it but only in a side(?) power attack
