Can anyone explain how exactly Marathon extends the game? Does it make research longer or does it cause more abduction/terror/recovery missions to occur throughout the game?

It doubles pretty much everything. Everything costs x2, research time x2 etc etc. It doesn't cause more abduction / terror missions though. Just makes it longer to go through the game since everything is slowed down.

Well it is possible to play marathon and tweak ini file to increase the number of UFO per month, council mission per month, so you could make everything take more time while increasing the *chance* for a tactical mission faster.

Hi. First of all I want to say thanks to everyone making Enemy Unknown even better game. I recently downloaded and installed Warspace Extension and I have one question. Can somebody give me (us) some final info about what Marathon mode is about? Reading all comments here I have found some contradictionary statements. Can somebody please answer following questions?
1. I believe that truth fact is that everything is doubled (research time, building time...). Is mission frequency same as in original? Or is there more time between each mission? (so only real difference in this mode is that you will spend more time scanning for activity and waiting?)
2. Is unit promotion also somehow slowed down (like more kills needed)?
3. How many missions will it take to finish this mode? I saw some victory screens of original with mission count averaging somewhere around 35. How many there are in Marathon?
4. Is alien progression somehow modified? Or when you finally research your first techs, you will run into hordes of late-game aliens?
5. Is there anything else worth noting?
