So basically just ungimping the ai in normal to its full potential (like in classic but without the bonus aim and crit)

What you can do is change the settings for Classic to make it on par with normal (modifiers, panic levels, etc) and play with the classic AI but the normal difficulty.

I've just posted a new mod which does something similar to this; it doesn't make Classic exactly like Normal, but it strikes a balance between them without changing anything else (like intercepting Abduction UFOs). It modifies the existing Classic mode so that the aliens can use their full AI, but all of the numeric changes (aim and crit bonuses, funding penalties, etc) are cut in half. It'll be a little harder than Normal, but a little easier than the original Classic.

Edit: I posted another similar mod, Normal Point Two, which is closer to what you requested; all of the numeric changes are completely removed (so Classic is just like Normal), but the aliens still get to use their full AI and attack with more than 5 units at a time.
