The problem is they're making Elder Scrolls into an MMO, not making an MMO out of elder scrolls. There is a big difference, and that difference is going to be a deal-breaker for a lot of people.

Making Elder Scrolls into an MMO is the exact same thing as making an MMO out of the Elder Scrolls. I don't really know what you mean by this. But regardless of what context you put it in, why is it automatically a problem? I hear this a lot from dedicated Elder Scrolls fans, and I'm interested in why they feel that way. I have been a solid Elder Scrolls fan since Morrowind, and I see no reason why this is a problem. Is it because you want to be sure to play every Elder Scrolls game, but you don't want the competition of other players? I'm not trying to dog you; I'm honestly curious.

I am not going to pay even 1 cent of my money for this game. I am not going to encourage ZeniMax Media to outsource some of their money and capital away from "House of Kindness", especially any games that relate to The Elder Scroll IP. Meh ...

Have heard some good things from the early testers, so I'm hopeful about, and eager to see, the final product one way or another, and praying over my email inbox and Facebook news feed daily that I'll get to have an early taste and a head start.

I hate to agree with the commentators calling this a WoW clone. But they have a strong point. Being a long term elder scrolls fan, from arena to skyrim, reading the novels, modding and a player of many other MMOs... I can tell you I will not be taking part of this spinoff of the elder scrolls series. And this makes me very sad. Hopefully this will die off like the cellphone games, and its effects do not touch the cannon of the main series. It has very little to do with what the core of an elder scrolls game is at its heart, & I'm not going to spell out each and every difference for you either. If you can't spot them on your own... perhaps you too enjoy the World of Warcraft, and want to see this title launch. I can understand from a business standpoint, Bethesda desire to expand into the MMO department. However, butchering such a title can have severe repercussions. And I very much hope this does not happen. Watching the progression of the elder scrolls series evolving should be an indicator of how it is already tarnished. Arena was truly a masterpiece, not only was it the first but it set the cadence of how things should define an elder scrolls game. The refined product we have today... Skyrim. A game which I enjoy thoroughly, but nonetheless are disappointed by its massive watering down. Even oblivion did away with many aspects of the game play morrowind featured. The point I'm driving at is Bethesda has a perfect, slightly tarnished product... and is continuing to run the George Lucas route and add as many bells and whistles as possible, all the while catering to the masses. This in turn is having a profound effect on the quality of their future games. I can only speculate how TES VI will be... no more stamina, or magicka, just health. Spell casting is infinite, only 3 skill trees... ect ect. Maybe there are a lot of people that are into that sort of stuff. Maybe TES Online will be a great success, and good on them. For me though, a person who appreciates the good old days & not a watered down quick play RMT riddled WoW clone. No, no thank you.

A lot of you sound excited to play TESO, and that's a good thing. Judging from this forum and many others, it looks like there will be a strong opening community. Only the quality of the game itself will determine how long that community lasts.
On another note, many dedicated TES fans seem pretty disappointed that their beloved series is becoming an MMO. I can only assume that these people are simply anti-MMOists or just gamers who prefer a single player experience. I couldn't imagine a TES fan who is also an MMO fan and is not excited about both of these worlds soon coming together.
Whatever the reasoning, hopefully a lot of the sketchy TES fans change their mind and give it a try, and they might find they really like it.
Lastly, anyone who thinks TESO is a WoW clone is painfully wrong. Just because an MMORPG will feature many things that ALL MMORPGS feature does not make it a WoW clone. WoW was not the first MMORPG, not even close. MMORPG is a genre, and of course is going to have distinct features that make it what it is. Rather than saying TESO will be a WoW clone, how about we say that ALL MMORPGs are Neverwinter Nights clones, and that all first person shooters are Wolfenstein 3D clones? All that said, there have been in fact some MMORPGs released in the past that borrowed so much from a particular game rather than the genre in general that they could be called clones. SWTOR was one of these games; fundamentally it was WoW with lightsabers. Rift was also pretty similar to WoW, though not nearly as much as SWTOR, and Rift is actually defended as a damn good game by a lot of players despite it's similarities to WoW.
TESO is not like Rift or SWTOR in that it does not borrow so much from a particular game to call it a clone. I can already tell this by watching the few videos available and reading the information revealed thus far.
If it fails then it is just bad, and it won't affect your beloved single player franchise in any way, shape or form.

In response to post #7479295.

@Exanthos this is NOT a WoW clone. Do some research.

Also Arena being called a masterpiece is a HUGE stretch and Morrowind is not the pinnacle of rpg divinity. Every TES has always been significantly different from its predecessors and successors. As for your predictions for TES VI, two words: hog wash.
