Looks like I've fond the mod causing this.

'twas SDO - Skyrim Distance Overhaul. Disabled it, played for a few hours - so far no prob.

This can also be caused by A More Beautiful Skyrim Experience mod.

It's less "the one mod causing this" and more "that last straw that broke the camel's/engine's back".

I still don't understand HOW they break the engine's neck.
