Hey guys,

 

I am starting to experience some issues with CTD. It started when I installed Dawnguard (surprise). I was able to get a mod which resolved the issue, at least for a while. I tried playing Skyrim again today and it began crashing to desktop after about 5-10 minutes of play time.

 

Not entirely sure why it is doing this or what I should do (without losing my save).

 

Here is some info:

 

Mods:

Skyrim.esm

Dawnguard.esm

HearthFires.esm

Update.esm

keeperpossiblefix.esp

 

^^ In that load order

 

System Information:

OS: Windows XP Professional

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Core Processor 5600+ , MMX, 3DNow (2CPUs)

Memory: 2560MB RAM

DirectX: 9.0c

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

Video Driver:

 

 

I have tried disabling Dawnguard and Hearthfire and keeperpossiblefix without help.

 

Any advice would be most welcome.

have you done the Beyond Death quest? I got the same problem as well. In my case, there is something wrong with Soul Cairn. The game runs fine until I enter Soul Cairn, then I constantly get CTD after a certain amount of time. I had to console through the quest to avoid entering Soul Cairn

the first thing you need to do is move Update.esm above Dawnguard and Hearthfire, as Dawnguard relies on some of the resources that are contained in Update.esm.
 
Secondly, I would advise downloading the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, Unofficial Dawnguard Patch and the Unofficial Hearthfire Patch, as these will fix all manner of glitches and bugs in vanilla Skyrim and the DLC.

Yes I have. This all started within the Soul Carin. I was able to get a mod which prevented major crashes while within the Soul Cairn but since then, it has occasionally CTD.

Excellent, thank you for your advice. I do love how it is called vanilla Skyrim XD

 

Seriously though, thanks for the advice. I will get around to installing these later today and if they fail or succeed I will post on this thread. Thank you.

Okay I have installed the patches the order is now:

 

Skyrim.esm

Update.esm

Dawnguard.esm

HearthFires.esm

Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp

Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp

Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp

keeperpossiblefix.esp

 

 

 

I have tried playing Skyrim with keeperpossiblefix enabled and disabled with the above load order, but the game crashes but not to desktop. It just lags incredibly, then stops working.

Based on my experience and many other threads, I believe there are three possible crashing problems in Soul Cairn:

- Keeper bug: crash when approach the keepers => keeperpossiblefix fixes this

- Lightning crash: CTD without error when approach the lightning storm above Valerica building and Boneyard =>don't find any fix but removing the lightning script with CK works

- Unknown bug: successfully and safely venturing the Soul Cairn without crash but ever since, the game will occasionally pop up Microsoft Virtual C++ run time error and stop working.=> bug not identified and no fix

Don't know if your problem is the fourth one or identical to the third but it's almost impossible to not having problem with Soul Cairn

I completed the Soul Cairn ages ago. I got the keeperfix mod which resolved the issue. Recently, the game has been crashing for no reason that I can determine. Completely random.

Update: I have used the TESEdit software to clean up the various mods that I have used and the CTD has ceased. The game is still somewhat laggy, however. This may be my computer as it has been on continuously for some days now, downloading things. So I will give my computer a wee rest later on, and will play again. Update will follow.

I played Skyrim again and although there was no lag, I still have the crash to desktop problem.

 

The order of my mods are:

 

• Skyrim.esm Active
• Update.esm Active
• Dawnguard.esm Active
• HearthFires.esm Active
• Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp Active
• Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp Active
• Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp Active
• keeperpossiblefix.esp

 

That is the exact load order. I have used BOSS to clean up the mods. I still get a CTD.

BOSS doesn't clean mods, just arranges their load order according to a 'guide' composed by the BOSS team through modder and mod users suggestions (or did you mean TES5Edit?). Even though you have just a handful of mods, I'd still like to see your BOSS log if you don't mind posting it.

 

Also, have you made any edits to the game ini files?
