I've been using mods since day one and I suppose you can call me an advanced user when it comes to mods.

I've not played Skyrim for a while, but I did subscribe to a few mods even though I didn't play. Today I decided it was time to return to Skyrim, but nothing works.

I tried to make a new character, but since I have the Alternative Life mod I'm supposed to get a different start. That didn't happen. I got the usual horse scene ride and after a bit I realised that no mods are being loaded. It seems like Skyrim.esm is the only file it loads. Not sure about the DLC.

Anyone know what to do?

Edit:

New problem. Skyrim.esm and Update.esm are missing from my Data Files. I'm not sure why this is happening. I did try to verify game integrity, but that solved nothing. I did change the plugins.txt file and I did add 2 new lines with the esm files, but that didn't fix the problem. I did the same to loadorder.txt. NMM is able to display the esm files correctly....

After Googling the problem it seems that it has happened before. I can't find a solution though. And no, the files are not missing. They are still present in my /Data/ folder.

I know this may sound foolish of me, especially as you said yourself that you are an advanced user, but are they not loading even when all are checked in the data files, that is to say are they all checked? Also could anything have caused a mess up in load order, (although I don't see how such an occurrence would cause ALL mods not to work)?

Also if you've not been on in a long time, might be worth checking you have the latest version of Skyrim, and that Update.esm is working fine.

Can't think of anything else I'm afraid.

Well, around 230 mods are activated in the loader, and I have over 500 mods in total. The mods I have checked in Data Files does not load in the game. There is only one of my save files that manage to load without a CTD. But when I load the game, a lot of messages pop up in the corner. The message is in fact from a mod, but I can't find any mod related weapons, items, quests or anything in the console.

Skyrim is indeed updated to the newest patch and so it SKSE and Script Dragon.

Bah, I'm not sure then, but you have a lot of mods activated, the maximum number of esp files and esm files you can have activated is 255 I believe, at which point serious problems start occurring. It may be in fact that some of your "Deactivated mods" still have a presence in the game is they replace any files, whatever the case the more mods you have the more unstable your game becomes. The last thing I can think of is a Verify Integrity of Game Cache and if not that maybe a re-install is in order?

I might end up re-installing everything. I'll have to do a back-up first though.

Have you run BOSS since you started up again?  There could be conflicts with updates.    Also, depending on which version of Skyrim you last played before taking a hiatus, some of the mods may no longer work as there were some major changes too.  Just because SKSE and Script Dragon are up to date (is Script Dragon still used by anything?) doesn't mean the individual mods still work correctly.

I'd strongly suggest running BOSS and see if it returns any errors.

I've used BOSS more than 5 times today. Last time I played Skyrim was 1-2 months ago, so I'm still very much updated.

Here's my load order. These are the files I currently have active, obviously.

Spoiler

Might help if you had a Skyrim.esm in that load order.  LOL!
