I know in the players guide it says that you can levitate across the water canal or whatever it is. All that happens if you drown yourself is a bridge appears I believe. Just levitate across the gap where the bridge appears. Unless drowning yourself opens a door or something also...

Yes, it clears some sort of force field or barrier out of the way. Perhaps the notes are a bit misleading.

Yeah, it actually removes an entire wall. So unless you have phase levitation or use TCL, I'm afraid you're gunna have to drown.
