Ah, come on, we can get DarnUI working as well. Compared with that you've gone through by now to get rid of the crashes it's also just a piece of cake, really.
As you weren't used to BOSS and load order or Wyre Bash and the bashed patch, I take it you simply didn't know about Archive Invalidation and its need for replacement-type mods either. And that's although it can be applied by a simple click of a button now.

Are you using Steam Oblivion or is it from a retail disc? I'm asking because Steam Oblivion requires 1 additional click of button for Archive Invalidation to work.
Anyways, you do have OBMM, the Oblivion Mod Manager, don't you? The NMM and Wrye Bash can apply Archive Invalidation as easily, too, but the Steam fix won't be that simple without it, if you have Steam Oblivion to begin with that is.

Alright, the easiest way to get Archive Invalidation going is either via OBMM's Utilities, the NMM has a similar menu I heard, or Wrye Bash's "Replacer" tab, then selecting "BSA Redirection" as the method of choice (I think it's called "Universal" in the NMM), it doesn't require any further options or setup, and clicking the button to apply it. If you're using Steam Oblivion by chance, you can click the button "Reset BSA timestamps" in OBMM's Utilities for Archive Invalidation, then apply BSA Redirection, and everything should work right away afterwards.

edit: And due to the nature of what it is you're doing by that, the risk to 'mess up' other things in the process is almost "0".

Ah, sorry, I really thought it'd 'just' be Archive Invalidation missing.

Coming to think of it though, it's more likely you tried installing DarnUI via NMM or some such. Its package structure is a bit more complex and unusual, being a UI replacement and not just a simple mod, and as such the NMM can't understand it.

Throw me a link to the download you're intending to install and I can walk you through, no trouble.

From what you told me it seems Archive Invalidation should be working fine now, so that's one potential future bother out the window already.

If ever in doubt, take a look into your data folder, and if there's something called "ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated.BSA" or "BSARedirection.BSA" or any similarly fishy sounding name of a BSA (sadly I don't know the one the NMM uses), and you search in your "oblivion.ini" for "sArchiveList" and the BSA is in this list, then all should be well and working.

Yup, I'm pretty sure the NMM won't understand that one.

It's meant to be installed either from the OMOD via OBMM, including a scripted wizard to lead one through the multiple choices and options,

or manually, following the quite detailed manual install instructions given in the readme/description. Especially the edits to the "oblivion.ini", to make proper use of the new fonts and text sizes, require one of those two means for installation, as the NMM, as far as I remember, simply can't handle that, yet.

I'll take a look at the folder structure inside the .7z to figure out what all exactly needs to be done as soon as I get some time off from work later this night.

If you haven't already succeeded yourself by then, that is, as the install instructions seem pretty sound and comprehensive to me.
