Unloading quest items

I tried several ways to Search this topic, but apparently I'm not using the correct wording. Can't imagine this subject NOT coming up over the last couple of years.

 

Understandably, while a quest is unfinished, you generally are not allowed to remove quest items from Inventory. But quite often, even after the quest has been completed, you _still_ can't remove quest items from Inventory. Things like Elder Scrolls, etc. If these were weightless, that would be no real concern. But by the time you get up to 30th, 40th, or 50th level, the accumulated weight of those items can amass to 40-60 pounds "off the top" of your carrying capacity. That puts you 40-60 pounds closer to being Overburdened and losing your fast travel and sprinting abilities.

 

Has anyone come up with a way to divest oneself of quest items once a quest is over? Preferably short of rewriting the program or using a cheat to remove Item numbers (which require that you _know_ what the Item number is).

Console command player.Drop <base ID> <amount> can also work on some items, but be careful - save before doing this - as some items just disappear when dropped and cannot be recovered.

Weapons and armor can be removed and recovered if you place them on a weapons rack or mannequin.

 

There doesn't appear to be an all encompassing way to remove all quest items and those ways I have noted above are not all perfect or work perfectly for every quest item. Be careful and save and be especially careful when using the console commands, do one item at a time and save (not quicksave either) before doing another - don't drop multiple items.

Well, I don't think the idea is to simply drop items to get rid of them. Rather, just simply be able to remove them from Inventory. Probably would just store them at any owned House. I'd be leery of the mod because that universally removes the Quest Item label from ALL Quest Items. Kind of wonder how that affects quests where completion hinges on presenting a unique Quest Item as proof of finishing the job -- when the required item no longer carries that "Quest Item" label.

It seems I actually tested this once. Strip naked of EVERYTHING except those items that you can't unload. What remains shows that you are still encumbered by the weight of those quest items. (Some of which are weightless, but most aren't.) So by @40th level I would still be lugging around 20 or so pounds that I had been stuck with for the last 20 levels since I had finished their quests.

That is one reason I hate the over using of aliases and setting items as quest items when it is entirely un-necessary. NPCs that have different packages and dialog during a quest are one thing. Repeating, randomly generated quest items and locations also. But unique items that there are only ever one of like the elder scrolls have no need to be put in an alias or made to be quest items. The quest would work just fine with a simple inventory check for the base item and there would be no problem about storing them or displaying them. Yes you COULD sell or otherwise lose the item before the quest is completed but so what?

I know this is an old post, but in case it's useful to someone else who finds themselves here, as I did... there IS this mod for SE:

It's called "Let Me Drop It". It includes nearly all quest items from vanilla game and all DLCs. The mod author as of today, is still working to add any missed items as people report them, and updating the mod frequently.
