Help! How do I upload an NPC replacer?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can anyone explain or point me to something that explains what files need to be uploaded after editing an NPC's appearance?

I am trying to edit Sapphire's appearance. It looks okay on my computer. However when I upload the .esm file I get a pixelated face!

I've seen dozens of NPC replacers, and I've seen tutorials on how to edit an NPC's appearance. They work fine. I must be missing something. A .nif file?

**I cannot seem to find or figure out what files need to be uploaded so that the NPC is truly altered.

(I am playing on XBox and PC)

To anyone that helps, many thanks in advance! :-)

It depends on whether you used mod added assets or not. If your NPC replacer requires assets from another mod, you need to make sure your users are aware of that and if necessary what order those required files should be installed / loaded in. If your NPC uses assets with permission from another mod but not that mod itself, then you need to include those files along with your plugin (ESM / ESP / ESL). On top of that, you need to include the face gen data files that are created for your NPC.

This is where I am getting stuck or doing something wrong.

How do I include the face gen data files? And thank you so much!

**I'm not using any external mods or tools. All changes to Sapphire's appearance are from Skyrim's vanilla race menu options.**

I didn't have enough time to fully expand upon that when I made that reply.

Face gen data files are created when you highlight the actor record and press Ctrl+F4

The files will be created in the following location:

Meshes > Actors > Character > Facegendata > Facegeom > [Actor source plugin] > [FormID#].nif

Textures > Actors > Character > Facegendata > Facetint > [Actor source plugin] > [FormID#].dds

Since you are editing a stock NPC the [Actor source plugin] is most likely Skyrim.esm. But in any event, it is always the plugin the provides the original actor record. It will never be a plugin that modifies the actor record.

[FormID#] is just that. The hexadecimal number associated with the actor record. Do note that the first two digits that correspond to load order position will always be 00 for this purpose.

For PC you can share those files loose but XBox might require that they be packed into a BSA. But I am unsure on that as I do not mod for XBox or any other console for that matter.
