Oblivion crash when lockpicking (among other things)

Hello everyone!

 

First of, thanks to all who take the time to come here and give technical support to people, I found lots and lots of very useful information on those forums.

 

I decided to post a new topic, as I'm pretty tired of trying to get Oblivion to work, and keeping on getting crashes. I started installing the game (and the mods!) in April, learned a lot since, and now, I'd like to play.

Basically, I cannot find why it keeps crashing. Here's a bit of history: when I first installed, I installed Better Cities (I don't see myself playing without it now), Unique Landscapes, and other things. Game was pretty stable in Leyawiin, but when I tried to start in Anvil (alternate start by Robert Evrae), the game was just randomly crashing, every few minutes.

I read and read the forums, the read-mes, etc., learned lots and lots of things, reinstalled several times, until I got something pretty stable a couple of weeks ago (using Wrye Bash, OBMM, BOSS, and TES4Edit).

The game worked fine in the Imperial City, worked fine in the outside world, until I reached Bravil. At first, it was crashing randomly, after maybe 10-15 minutes, almost always when opening a door (loading screen). I started the Better Cities quest "Strange bedfellows", and all hell broke loose! Game was then crashing every 10-15 seconds (yes, seconds). Needless to say its impossible to play like this. I tried to finish the quest, and get the boat to leave. Didn't work. I reloaded old saves, before I started the quest. No luck. I reloaded old saves from before I arrived in Bravil. It worked as long as I'm out of the city, but crashes immediately upon entering. (Played just a few minutes outside the city, no more than ten, but crashes immediately when I try crossing the bridge into Bravil)

I decided to make a clean install, no luck.

 

Then, I got the new version of Better Cities. So I reinstalled EVERYTHING, trying to make a clean install (with patches, cleaning with TES4Edit, BOSS, Bashed patch, Archive invalidation, etc.). After this, my hopes were very high, as I thought the new Better Cities version (and the new UOP) would solve all my problems... I couldn't have been more wrong...

After the Bethesda logo, all I'd get was a Windows sound, and a CTD.

I reinstalled everything again. Testing the game after every few mods (following an installation order found online). Everything went fine, until I installed Unique Landscapes and Unique Landscapes compilation patches. Then, crash after the Bethesda logo. My guess was that the new Better Cities version was not compatible with UL. So I uninstalled it, sadly (but if I have to choose, I'll take BC over UL, though I'd love to have both).

Anyway, the game started, I was "happy", until I got jailed after a couple of minutes (trying to see if everything loads properly, etc.). When I tried lockpicking the door, the game crashed instantly on my first left-click. I restarted, turns out I get that CTD every single time I try lock picking a door.

 

I don't know what to do anymore. My mods are not crazy, they seem to run well on other people's computer, together, but I just can't play! Been trying for more than two months now!

 

A few more information:

I play the Steal GOTY Edition.

My computer is an Asus G74 with an i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 560m with 3GB of VRAM. So the game should be just fine.

- Elys silent

 

 

 

All those mods have been installed with the patches appropriate for the other mods, to avoid conflict, according to the read mes, and info found online. All have been sorted with BOSS, cleaned with TES4Edit, and bashed patched with Wrye Bash.

 

If anyone can help me, I'll be more than grateful. At this point, I just want to enjoy my game (with mods if possible, especially after all this time spent, I don't really wanna go back to vanilla...)

One more thing: for some reason when I started the game this morning, the screen "Oblivion is now detecting your hardware" popped up, as if my Oblivion.ini file was missing (it was not).
I also use normally DarkUId, but it's not reinstalled (yet).

Post your load order with UL installed, hard to find a problem with a working LO.

 

But I suspect that your problem it with the UL compatibility patches. Either you are missing a needed patch, or you have one installed for a mod you don't use.

 

Here is a really good trick for tracking down these kinds of problems; run TES4LODGen. It scans your entire load order and gives a good error log.

SO, the load order I gave was the one "working", as long as I wouldn't try to lockpick anything, I would then have an instant crash the millisecond I would left-click. Since I could never find out the problem, I went with a complete reinstall.

Thanks to work, I'm not done yet. :D

I'm currently reinstalling without Unique Landscapes, to see if it improves stability with Better Cities. Then I will reinstall UL, and will cross all the fingers I have for it work properly. I just could never find out why my Oblivion was constantly crashing after a few minutes when in city.

Hopefully, I'll be able to do all that tonight after work, and will post here the new load order, and a report of what's happening.

 

P.S. For those who have the lockpicking problem, I could not find much info on it, it seems the most commonly accepted causes (meaning I found it twice) are a corrupt install of Oblivion, and/or too many programs open on the desktop, and a crash coming from the multiple mouse pointers (2 for Oblivion, and one for Windows, all at once when lockpicking).

The first thing you should do is to get rid of QTP, OBGE and Streamline while troubleshooting. Install weOCPS and Fast Exit. Then rebuild your Bashed Patch, and do not use any of the BP tweaks (while troubleshooting).

I have weOCPS and FastExit2. The latter made the crashes on exit stop, but I never really noticed a difference after installing weOCPS (maybe my hopes were too high...).

I will try tomorrow without Streamline (which always worked liked a charm so far) and OBGE (same thing, never really noticed any impact on the CTDs).

 

For some reason, before I installed the new version of Better Cities, the game would start (with the exact same mods), but would crash pretty fast in cities (and cities only).

I hope I'll have time tomorrow to test all that, and maybe to go back to BC 5.2.6 (currently 5.3.3), and see what happens.

So, I installed UL, and tried without Steamline. The game wouldn't boot. I then reinstalled the 5.2.6 version of Better Cities, and it worked. I crashed after a few minutes in Bravil though.

 

It's really bothering! I have been trying to play for more than two months now. Apparently, most of my previous are corrupt, and won't work anymore (yeah! The only 15-20 hours of gameplay I was able to get, and they're all trashed...)

 

Any way I could get a list of ULs that do NOT interfere with BC? So I can install both without having to worry about any conflicts? Same if you know of any mods that might conflicts with Better Cities and that are in my load order.

All of Unique Landscapes are compatible with BC. Some may need patches, but they are freely available. I don't have Oblivion installed currently, but when I did I ran every single UL with BC without issue. That is not your problem.

 

I previously suggested you get rid of QTP and OBGE while troubleshooting. What is the situation there? You only say that you got rid of Streamline -- is it still uninstalled, or have you restored it?

I wiped out my install, as it kept on crashing. I will reinstall ASAP, without QTP and OBGE (and Streamline). I guess I should not reinstall Bomret textures for SI either?

I will try that with Better Cities 5.2.6 and Unique Landscapes, see if I still have crashes every other minutes. If it works flawlessly (one can always hope!), I will keep it this way (even though I would miss QTP very very much, and OBGE at least a little bit).

 

As for the patches, I downloaded anther compilation (on planetelederscrolls), and it had one more esp for Better Cities than the one I had.

Another thing I did not find the answer either (I admit I didn't thoroughly search yet, just thinking about it while typing): it never occured to me then, but my Better Cities was 5.2.6, the Better Cities Ressources (or maybe Permanent ressources?) was 4.9.0, and the third file was another file version as well. All downloaded here at Nexus. I noticed the new versions all had the same version number (5.3.3), does that have an influence?
