Preface:

I've been experimenting with the creation kit, BSA browser and audacity trying to figure out a way to add spell incantations to spells in Skyrim but have come to the realization that it's a bit more complex than just slapping an audio file onto a spell. I've never done any mods before and I'd really like this to be my first. Since I think it's a really cool idea that I have I'm not going to share what audio files I have in mind; for the off chance that someone else wants to use this idea in their own way. =)

Request:

I'm looking for links to tutorials that could point me in the right direction on how to achieve my desires results.

Vision:

  • When a spell is cast, the player says an incantation along with the normal spell animations/effects
  • The incantation is specific to the school of magic
  • The incantations are shorter/longer (more words/complexity) depending on the length of the spell
  • Or, Preferably, incantations are spell specific and the audio associated with each spell is unique
  • And, incantations are linked specifically to the spell NOT just a simple replacement of the Vanilla sound effect audio files
  • After the vanilla spells incantations are finished, making this mod compatible with other popular spell mods, such as Midas Magic and Apocalypse Spells
  • Gender specific incantations
  • Subtitle support eventually!

Feasibility:

As I said in the preface, I'm new to all of this so I'm not sure if this idea is actually possible. I'm willing to take however long it takes to learn what's necessary to make this mod a reality while also being as compatible and stable as possible.

Conclusion:

I hope I was able to outline most of what I'm requesting in a neat and readable manner. I'm anxious to make this idea a reality! Thank you for any feedback!

I went ahead and made a mock up of that the results would be like. In the video I use two spells, Transmute (right hand) and Ironskin (left hand).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbQYTuICF3o&feature=youtu.be

Things to note:

The transmute spell 'appears' to work as I intend in this video, but the problem is all I did was found the sound effect for the spell charging and release and just pasted the incantation onto them. So the problem now is, it's impossible to have a different incantation for the spell Waterbreathing's charge up because the same audio file is shared with transmute.

With Ironskin I didn't have a release incantation because if you drink a potion with the same effect it will play the same sound effect used as the buff going up and will be completely out of place. Which is why somehow I need to associate the incantation audio specifically with the spell.

I've gotten a little further with how to do this but what it would mean is basically recreating all the spells which you would have to learn from tomes. It would also mean companions and monsters can't use the incantations either =/ I've figured out how to make the sounds specific to each spell thanks to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L9x3mX-72g But the downside is any NPC that uses the spells will sound female (since that's the voice set I'm starting with). So right now every spell can either sound male or female =/ Getting it gender specific is turning out to be a monumental task lol

Okay, sorry for my lack of usefullness, but I have no modding experience whatsoever. ^.^" Just wanted to say that I freaking LOVE this idea, and can't wait to see how it turns out.

Thanks a lot for your interest! I can't wait to have it fully functional either. I'll do the female voice set first as best as I know how to do it and release that as like an alpha build =)

Might I point you to this mod?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/39643//?

It adds a few verbal incantations to a few of the spells. They're currently female-only, but I have every reason to believe the author will expand it.

Now, personally, I agree that there should be incantations. I mean, where does this magic come from? How is it harnessed and manifested in the chosen form? In just about every fantasy book/movie/game/tv series you can think of, there's a verbal activation for the spell.

I like this concept so much that I'd even be willing to offer my voice to a project...but, I have a house full of parrots, and no soundproof room, so any incantation would be interrupted with random bird sounds.

You managed to find my mod haha I meant to post something on this thread showing off what I have done so far.

I was eating dinner with my brother tonight and she mentioned to me that when you use dragon shouts the game has voices for male and female. I've been looking into how they do this but it's so convoluted I have no idea how it's done. Anyone have any idea on if it's possible to use the same method for spell incantations?

Once I figure out how to do the voices for male/female/races I'll definitely be looking for voice actors lol. I want to finish the Baldur's Gate version first though =)

Yeah, definitely finish that Baldur's Gate mod! I haven't actually tested it out yet, but I've had trouble with downloading absolutely anything, be it through NMM or chrome.

Great idea! And definitely going to get this mod when it comes out.

If I may request that when you able to get the sound effects to all races + female/male version you might want to make different version for each race...

For example Male Dark Elf mage with hunger for power and being evil character probably wouldn't sound like Male Dark Elf mage that solely uses magic for greater good and helping others if you catch my idea.
