We're contacted directly by E.T.s, who would represent Humanity?

If you were in the UN (not representing any country), and a vote was cast to see who would speak for the entire population, what country would you pick? Which one of the branches would you choose of that country, eg Congress, the President, Prime Minister, Parliament, the Queen, Cardinals, the Pope, etc.

Why did you go with that choice? What do you think their agenda would be?

(this is also assuming we can communicate freely with the aliens for whatever reason, and able to understand one another)

Ideally, it wouldn't come down to anything like a vote. Reason being that politicians would all be too caught up in their own ego or polling to want to make themselves first among humanity to broker some sort of deal to actually care about the implications of that deal. Put simply, they only care about making themselves, their country, or their beliefs look good, and well, to an enlightened being, that would only make humanity look incredibly stupid and petty. And well, let's face it, they already knew that about us from our radio signals which have been broadcast since the 30's.

No, if anyone would be speaking for the entire population of the world, it would have be someone who not only has the scientific background to be able to comprehend the world and how things interact, but also have the humility to recognize how both great and insignificant all aspects of humanity are. For that... I'd have to say Neil Degrasse Tyson is probably among the top 10 suited... He knows enough about astronomy, knows good background in physics, has a good core philosophy, has some humility, is a sci-fi geek, and doesn't seem to have many character faults. Frankly, among quasi-famous figures, he's probably the best bet we have in putting a good foot forward, while also being completely disposable should they decide to get all zappy during the first formal meeting.

@ Vagrant0 LOL completely disposable , might give him second thoughts bout taking the job .

Well, let's be honest about it. His job is essentially running a planetarium and occasionally doing commentaries on the state of science. As awesome as he is, if he goes missing, they just open up the position and hire someone else and get Michio Kaku to do more video spots.

Any politician or leadership type figure, and you suddenly have to deal with not only an aggressive alien presence, but also a power vacuum and a grouping of people who are now out for green blood.
