Why do PC games crash so much?

What games? Are you modding them? Does your computer meet the requirements for the game you are trying to play, at the settings you are trying to play it at? Is the moon in the wrong phase? Are you not holding your face right? Is your computer clean of malware?

If you're referring to games like Skyrim or other "modable" games, I'd venture to say that it's because there's been a shift from dependability to one in which new features are more valued (new items, locations, quests, characters, etc). New features don't experience the same levels of testing before release as the old-school approach. Effectively, everything's become a "Beta"

because anyone can have a pc and the majority of pc users don't have the first clue about how to use it properly.

and also people put black text on white backgrounds. that's a proven method to crash even the newest most robust pc.

it depends mostly on the stability of your personal setup, hardware, OS and the game you play, the game engine. it is the nature of software and the related hardware that nothing is completely free of errors ctd or gliches because of so many dependencies. and if you do modding, overclocking or use buggy hardware you will encounter even more crashes than expected. the main and difficult task is to find the source of ctd and to eliminate it. even hardware like cpu and gpu is never free of errors. but problems will be solved in most cases by microcode, bios or driver updates before release. game releases are a different story and you may find yourself sometimes in a situation of a beta-tester. so early adopting is not always a wise decision... it is no secret that many games reach their full stability months or years after official release. just track the date and number of patches. and this does not mean that they can not crash...
