Forger & Game updades - Advice

A few words of advice when using Forger.

Before updating your game, consider that each game update has a good chance to break some or most of the mods. They will have to be updated by their authors.

When updating your game :

  1. Disable all the mods BEFORE updating the game. (button "Reset All Forges")
  2. Download the game update.
  3. Look for mod updates.
  4. Beware when reactivating mods. If they aren't updated to work with the new game version, they usually stop working and can even make the game crash.

If you forgot to disable the mods (or the game has been automatically updated) :

  1. Disable all the mods (button "Reset All Forges")
  2. "Verify Files" on your game plateform, and fix the game files if asked. (To make sure you have a clean install. Because sometimes, forge edits combined with an update messes up the game files.)
  3. Look for mod updates.
  4. Beware when reactivating mods. If they aren't updated to work with the new game version, they usually stop working and can even make the game crash.

If a mod doesn't work :

  • Is the mod version supposed to be compatible with your game version? (The game version is displayed in the bottom right corner of the game menu.) (And about the mod, refer to the mod page. Usually, modders work on the latest game version. So check the upload date.)
  • Sometimes it works after cleaning all former edits using "Reset All Forges".
  • It's possible Forger lost track of edits from a previous mod version and can't cancel them anymore. In this case you can use the "Verify Files" option on your game plateform.
  • If there are no errors when you activate a mod, it doesn't mean there is nothing wrong.
  • There's no game version check inside the mods.
  • Forger is "powerful" because it offers the possibility to edit any byte(s) inside the Forge files. (Though, knowing what bytes to change to what value is very complicated and a lot of work.)
  • But it is "dumb" because it doesn't know the game files data structure, which means it can't detect errors inside the data.
  • It will make errors only if :
    • it doesn't find the file to edit
    • it tries to write bytes beyond the end of the file
    • the patch (mod) is not written properly
